The US National Academies Board on Research Data and Information has a study underway on workforce and educational issues raised by the new demands for digital curation. As part of this work, the sturdy committee will be holding a public symposium on 19 July in Washington DC which I think will be of interest to many CNI-announce readers. . More details are below.

The Board on Research Data and Information (BRDI) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is currently conducting a study on "Future Career Opportunities and Educational Requirements for Digital Curation." Digital curation is defined by the committee as "active enhancement and management of digital information assets for current and future use." Margaret Hedstrom of the University of Michigan is the Chair of the study committee. The other members are: Lee Dirks, Nicholas Economides, Peter Fox, Michael Goodchild, Heather Joseph, Ron Larsen, Carole Palmer, Steven Ruggles, David Schindel, and Stephen Wandner. Their affiliations and biographical summaries are located on our website. Sponsors of the study include the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Science Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. As part of the proceedings of the study, BRDI is holding a 1-day "Symposium on Digital Curation in the Era of Big Data: Career Opportunities and Educational Requirements." The purpose of this meeting is to provide a forum for stakeholders in digital curation to hear perspectives from the private, governmental, and academic sectors and to exchange ideas. We would like to invite you and your professional colleagues to attend the symposium and participate in its discussions. Unfortunately, due to limited resources, we are not able to cover the cost of your travel and attendance, but there is no registration fee.
