I wanted to share this pointer from Neil Beagrie to the presentations and report from a recent Budapest conference on the economics of archiving scientific data. These offer a very timely look at some of the experience and thinking in Europe on these challenges.

The Alliance for Permanent Access has just completed its annual conference (Budapest, 4 November) : this year the theme was the economics of archiving scientific data.

I wanted to share this announcement from Johns Hopkins with the CNI-announce readership. This is a pioneering digital humanities project that for me suggests some fascinating new kinds of research questions dealing with the study of larger numbers of versions or variations of a work, or a genre than was feasible in a world of physical artifacts. I think we'll see this theme of managing a new abundance of evidence appear in a number of digital humanities programs in the near future.

There will be a session on the Rose project at the Fall CNI meeting.

A Guide to the Fall 2008 Coalition for Networked Information Task Force Meeting

The Fall 2008 CNI Task Force meeting, to be held at the Renaissance Washington Hotel in Washington, DC on December 8 and 9, offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at Task Force member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the "roadmap" to the sessions at the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current developments in networked information. As always, we have strived to present sessions that reflect late-breaking developments and also take advantage of our venue in Washington DC to provide opportunities to interact with policy makers and funders.

As usual, the CNI meeting proper is preceded by an optional orientation session for new attendees-both representatives of new member organizations and new representatives or alternate delegates from existing member organizations-at 11:30 AM; guests are also welcome. Refreshments are available for all at 12:15 PM on Monday, December 8. The opening plenary is at 1:15 PM and will be followed by two rounds of parallel breakout sessions. Tuesday, December 9, includes additional rounds of parallel breakout sessions, lunch and the closing keynote, concluding around 3:30 PM. Along with plenary and breakout sessions, the meeting includes generous break time for informal networking with colleagues and a reception which will run till 7:00 PM on the evening of Monday, December 8, after which participants can enjoy a wide range of dining opportunities in the Washington area.

The Association of Research LIbraries has just released the final report of a study that they funded through Ithaka on new practices in digital scholarly communication. Washington DC--Presentation audio and slides are now online from the recent forum on "Reinventing Science Librarianship: Models for the Future," co-sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI). Leaders of research libraries and campus IT services gathered in Arlington, Virginia, October 16-17, 2008, to discuss trends in scientific research and the development of new library roles responsive to those trends.

After an extensive process of vetting and experimentation, the first production release of the Open Archives Initiative Object Reuse and Exchange Specifications are now available. The press release from Carl Lagoze and Herbert Van de Sompel reproduced below gives the details; the materials are all at www.openarchives.org. I think that these are going to be an important tool for a number of different application areas. We'll be having coverage of this work at the fall CNI member meeting.

Over the past two years the Open Archives Initiative (OAI), in a project called Object Reuse and Exchange (OAI-ORE), has gathered international experts from the publishing, web, library, repository, and eScience communities to develop standards for the identification and description of aggregations of Web resources. These standards provide the foundation for applications and services that can visualize, preserve, transfer, summarize, and improve access to the aggregations that people use in their daily Web interaction: including multiple page Web documents, multiple format documents in institutional repositories, scholarly data sets, and online photo and music collections. The OAI-ORE standards leverage the core Web architecture and concepts emerging from related efforts including the semantic web, linked data, and Atom syndication. As a result, they integrate both with the emerging machine-readable web, Web 2.0, and the future evolution of networked information.

Published by the MIT Press and the Carnegie Foundation, the book is a collection of 30 essays written by leaders in the open education movement. Kumar will discuss how open access can transform education and what the book’s contributors and their research can teach us. According to Kumar, “a look at the landscape tells us that efforts with open education so far have been largely confined to attempts at improving what we already do. While this is certainly valid, we encourage consideration of approaches that transcend traditional practices, organizations, disciplines, and audiences.”

Opening Up Education argues that we must develop not only the technical capability but also the intellectual capacity for transforming tacit pedagogical knowledge into commonly usable and visible knowledge: that a fresh perspective on resources and relationships available to education is required to enhance our readiness to take advantage of the opportunity presented by open education.
