10th International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations Uppsala, Sweden, June 13-16, 2007 http://epc.ub.uu.se/ETD2007/ ETD2007 - Added Value for E-theses

This meeting offers scope for an exchange of experience and consolidation of cooperation in the field of electronic theses and dissertations at local, national and international levels. Under the general theme "Added Value for E-theses", ETD 2007 is organised around two main themes: "Integrating ETDs with institutional processes and practices" and "Value added services". The themes of the conference call for reflection on opportunities for joint efforts among various players in the production and information chain, both inside and outside our universities.

HIGHER EDUCATION AND LIBRARY LEADERS VOICE SUPPORT FOR FREE ACCESS TO FEDERAL RESEARCH

Washington, DC – In remarks at a forum on “Improving Access to Publicly Funded Research,” leaders of major higher education and library organizations voiced their support for the goals of recent measures to expand public access to research funded by the US Government. The forum was co-sponsored by Association of American Universities (AAU), Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), and SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition).

I want to share this very important announcement with CNI-announce subscribers. This effort follows up on the joint Mellon/Microsoft/CNI/JISC/DLF meeting that was held in the spring to explore repository interoperability (information on the meeting, including the final report, is at http://msc.mellon.org/Meetings/Interop/ ), and establishes a framework for developing and validating solutions to increasingly urgent interoperability problems, It builds upon the context and strategies that have been used so successfully in earlier Open Archives Initiative work on the protocol for metadata harvesting.

There will be a presentation on this effort at the December CNI member meeting, and I expect that CNI will be contributing to the advancement of this work in a number of ways going foward.

2nd International Conference on Open Repositories "Achieving Interoperability in an Open World" San Antonio, Texas USA January 23-27, 2007 www.openrepositories.org

The US National Library of Medicine does a fabulous job of mobilizing good thinkers to contribute to its ongoing long-term planning process. I had the good fortune to be able to participate in part of this process, and learned a great deal from it. The report from the planning effort is now available at

and is well worth reading. It addresses interactions between information technology, biomedical research, large-scale social trends, and the evolving role of the National Library of Medicine.
