Herbert van de Sompel will open the conference with a plenary talk titled “From the Version of Record to a Version of the Record,” in which he will look at the long term trends shaping the digital scholarly record and the technologies and architectures needed to manage these changes. The meeting will close with the first public presentation from Ithaka S+R on the key findings of their 2012 United States Faculty Survey: Deanna Marcum and Roger Schonfeld from Ithaka will guide us through the survey findings, after which Judy Russell, Dean of Libraries at the University of Florida, and a member of the survey project advisory board, will offer perspectives on the findings as a campus and library community leader.

I wanted to share (somewhat belatedly; my apologies for the delay) this announcement from Herbert van de Sompel about the availability of a draft specification for public comment from the joint Open Archives Initiative/NISO ResourceSynch effort. This is an extremely ambitious project that takes on an important but highly challenging problem, and thus it's particularly important that it get wide public review and comment.

We have a wonderful pair of plenary speakers for our upcoming Member meeting in San Antonio on April 4-5, 2013.

Herbert van de Sompel will open the conference with a talk titled "From the Version of Record to a Version of the Record". This should be quite extraordinary, based on the conversations that Herbert and I have been having, because instead of focusing deeply on one of the portfolio of important projects that Herbert has worked on in recent years, such as Momento, or Resource Synchronization, or Object Reuse and Exchange, in this talk Herbert steps back and looks at the long term trends shaping our digital scholarly record and the technologies and architectures needed to manage these changes. He juxtaposes the evolving worldwide web and our understanding of it to the way we have thought about digital archives over time. It is very unusual to see this sort of examination of the broad picture across time, of understanding information technologies as products of their times and contexts, of characterizing shifting conceptual paradigms, and yet I cannot stress how essential I believe such insights are to developing the collective wisdom to craft future generations of networked information technologies and services. I am delighted that Herbert is able to join us to share his thinking.

We will close the meeting with the first public presentation from Ithaka S+R on the key findings of their 2012 United States Faculty survey. This large-scale survey, which has taken place every three years since 2000, is one of the best sources for understanding both the current state and evolution of faculty needs and perceptions about libraries, scholarly publishing, and the collection and discovery of information resources. This data should offer important insights on where faculty stand with regard to developments ranging from research data management to scholarly publishing alternatives to e-books, and also help us to see where the trend lines are going, and how rapidly. Deanna Marcum and Roger Schonfeld from Ithaka will guide us through the survey findings, after which Judy Russell, Dean of LIbraries at the University of Florida and a member of the survey project advisory board, will offer perspectives on the finding as a campus and library community leader. An interesting new development in this generation of the faculty survey is a provision to administer a localized version at a specific campus (and then compare campus to national results), and Judy will report on her experiences with a pilot version of such a localized study.

I am reposting a workshop announcement from Martin Halbert at University of North Texas. The program on "Futures of Academic Publishing" will feature a number of perspectives on developments in this arena. CNI recently released a report of an executive roundtable on Institutional Strategies and Platforms for Scholarly Publishing. There is growing interest in new models of scholarly communication and publishing and an ever increasing number of projects and initiatives seeking to test new models.

The upcoming Futures of Academic Publishing Symposium will be held on May 30-31, 2013 in Dallas, Texas. This event will bring together key stakeholders from academic research, funding agencies, industry, and the publishing field to explore the futures of academic publishing. Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Director of Scholarly Communication at the Modern Language Association, will deliver a keynote address that will challenge conference attendees to engage in an active discussion for two days of how scholarly publishing can evolve to most effectively meet the needs of academia and society.

We have just posted a report on the Executive Roundtable that was held at the fall CNI meeting on Dec. 10, 2012. The topic was Institutional Strategies & Platforms for Scholarly Publishing. Teams representing senior level library and IT organizations from 13 institutions described their experiences, concerns, strategies, and future plans related to this dynamic and evolving landscape. The report summarizes the discussion and includes strategies on library-faculty partnerships, concerns beyond the hosting and editorial processes, e-journal and digital monograph initiatives, and relationships between institutional publishing units and commercial entities. A healthy ecosystem for scholarly communication requires a continuum from independently distributed work to post-publication peer review. With funding from the Sloan Foundation, the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University created the PressForward project to explore and produce the best means for collecting, screening, and drawing attention to the vast expanse of scholarship that is currently decentralized across the web or does not fit into traditional genres such as the journal article or the monograph.

This video provides an overview of current efforts to distribute and evaluate scholarly work available on the open web, and an explanation of the experimental methods behind PressForward’s Digital Humanities Now and Journal of Digital Humanities. It also includes a preview of the open source adaptations to WordPress software that PressForward is developing to enable scholarly communities to easily aggregate, select, and credit work published on the open web.

Scholarly communication across all disciplines is changing profoundly under the influence of new technologies. New models, tools and standards are being developed that aim to enhance, enable or entirely replace formerly ingrained forms of scholarly communication, including publications, courses, conferences and policy. The Beyond the PDF conference brings together scholars, librarians, archivists, publishers and research funders in a lively forum, not just to broaden awareness of current efforts across disciplines, but to define the future through discussions, challenge projects, demonstrations and seeding new partnerships and collaborations. Individually and collectively, we aim to bring about a change in modern scholarly communications through the effective use of information technology. Beyond the PDF is organized by FORCE11 (http://force11.org), a group of stakeholders that arose organically from the first Beyond the PDF workshop, held at the University of California, San Diego, in 2011, and a follow on workshop held at Dagstuhl that same year. We will actively engage the membership of FORCE11 to shape and evolve this and future workshops, as the conference itself provides a platform for those interested in creating new modes of conference organization and participation. FORCE11 and the Beyond the PDF conference are supported by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Extending Access to Scholarly Resources: JSTOR's Alumni Program, a presentation given at CNI's fall 2012 membership meeting in December is now available on CNI's two video channels:

In 2009, JSTOR began partnering with various institutions in a pilot program to provide access to their alumni. After nearly three years of collecting feedback on the program, and based on an enthusiastic response from pilot partners, the Alumni Access program is being made accessible to all JSTOR participating institutions. In this video, librarians who participated in the pilot will discuss how this tool was used for engaging with alumni, and what was learned about the level of interest in access to scholarly resources after graduation.

The second ANADP (Aligning National Approaches to Digital Preservation) conference has been scheduled for Barcelona, Spain on November 18-20, 2013. This is a follow on to the first ANADP conference which was held in Tallinn, Estonia in May 2011, which was an excellent discussion of potential alignment strategies across various national preservation programs and was documented in a 2012 volume of proceedings published by the Educopia Institute. The outcomes from this meeting, and strategies for moving ahead, have been refined at a 2012 workshop held in connection with iPres, and a just-concluded January 14, 2013 Workshop held in conjunction with the International Digital Curation Conference now taking place in Amsterdam. (I will share a pointer to materials from the January workshop when they are available.)
