JCDL 2013 CALL FOR PAPERS AND PROPOSALS

The ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL 2013) is a major international forum focusing on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, organizational, and social issues. JCDL encompasses the many meanings of the term digital libraries, including (but not limited to) new forms of information institutions and organizations; operational information systems with all manner of digital content; new means of selecting, collecting, organizing, distributing, and accessing digital content; theoretical models of information media, including document genres and electronic publishing; and theory and practice of use of managed content in science and education.

JCDL 2013 will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana (USA), 23-25 July 2013. The program is organized by an international committee of scholars and leaders in the digital libraries field and attendance is expected to include several hundreds of researchers, practitioners, managers, and students.

I'm reposting this announcement from our colleagues at NCSU. The Toolkit is a rich resource devised to assist institutions with the planning process for new types of learning spaces, especially informal (non-classrooom) spaces. We are happy to announce the release of the Learning Space Toolkit (http://learningspacetoolkit.org).

The Learning Space Toolkit is a freely available resource designed to support the full lifecycle of a learning space design project, from defining the goals and needs to designing the space to supporting it. By using the Toolkit, institutions will be better equipped to orchestrate the planning process so that learners are better supported and spaces, technology, and services are effective. The International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL) constitutes a leading scientific forum on digital libraries that brings together researchers, developers, content providers and users in the field of digital libraries. TPDL 2013 will be organized by University of Malta and it will be held in Valletta, Malta on September 22-26, 2013.

• Aims and scope * Valuable and rapidly increasing volumes of data are produced or transformed into digital form by all fields of scientific, educational, cultural, business and governmental activities. For this purpose the digital libraries community has developed long-term and interdisciplinary research agendas, providing significant results, such as conceptual models, added value infrastructures, software tools, standards and services.

On September 20-21, 2012 the Library of Congress hosted its annual Storage Architectures Meeting, which looks at hardware and storage systems in the context of large scale digital preservation needs; it is an excellent opportunity to understand where the storage industry is headed in terms of supporting digital preservation. CNI Director Clifford Lynch and Associate Director Joan Lippincott will be attending the EDUCUASE conference in Denver in November. While there, they will present a Community Update on Nov. 8th to highlight CNI's program and current developments in a broad range of areas related to digital content. This update, geared to all interested in recent developments in digital information, welcomes those who have not attended recent CNI meetings and want to hear about the latest developments in CNI's areas of activity. CNI is engaged in work on the cyberinfrastructure needs for scholarship, particularly regarding data curation, e-science, and digital humanities; management of scholarly identity; institutional repositories; learning spaces; and information and services in the mobile environment.

I'm delighted to announce that Dr. Hunter Rawlings III, the President of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and former President of both Cornell University and the University of Iowa, will be giving the closing plenary address at the CNI Fall Membership meeting, to be held December 10-11, 2012 in Washington DC. In his role as President of AAU, Hunter is ideally positioned to offer us important insight into the future of the higher education system and the roles of multi-institutional collaboration, information technology, digital content, and other developments in shaping that future. This should be a very exciting conclusion to our meeting.

I am also personally looking foward to giving the customary opening plenary for the fall meeting; there have been so many fascinating new developments over the past year that I want to discuss, as well as sharing thoughts on the future, and the role that CNI will play in shaping that future.

We are still finalizing the breakout sessions, and the list will be announced here when it's ready. But I can assure you that we have a great collection of sessions in store, including some coverage of developments in massive open online classes, an update on the Digital Preservation Network, a report on the National Archival Authorities Infrastructure, a session on the national e-text pilots, a discussion of Wikipedia and cultural memory organizations, an introduction to the new international Research Data Alliance, and a federal funder panel. To mention only a few.

So look forward to an outstanding meeting this December, and please register if you haven't done so already.

Networks And The Paradox Of The Active Learner, a project briefing session presented at CNI's spring 2012 membership meeting, by Gardner Campbell (of Virginia Tech) is now available on CNI's two video channels:

In this presentation, Gardner Campbell discusses his experiences with the course “From Memex to YouTube,” which has been conducted with graduate and undergraduate students, and also as a faculty-staff development seminar networked among a dozen or so institutions across the US, including Rice University, UC Berkeley, and Virginia Tech. The course aims to help participants thrive and innovate within the rapid pace of change in information and communications technology by introducing them to the powerful visions and conceptual frameworks underlying the development of networked interactive computing.

Campbell provides an overview of the seminar design, a description of outcomes and lessons learned over three years, and a consideration of pedagogical vs. andragogical strategies, with particular attention to difficulties and opportunities outlined in Carroll & Rosen’s classic human-computer interaction essay, “Paradox of the Active User.”

Call for Nominations: Paul Evan Peters Award DEADLINE: OCTOBER 26, 2012

The Paul Evan Peters Award recognizes the most notable and lasting international achievements related to information technology and the creation and use of information resources and services that advance scholarship and intellectual productivity. Past winners have been Christine L. Borgman (2011), Professor and Presidential Chair in Information Studies, UCLA; Daniel E. Atkins (2008), inaugural director of the National Science Foundation's Office of Cyberinfrastructure; Paul Ginsparg (2006), founder of arXiv, an e-print archive for articles in the sciences; Brewster Kahle (2004), founder and chairman of the board of the Internet Archive; "father of the Internet" Vinton Cerf (2002); and Tim Berners-Lee (2000), inventor of the World Wide Web. All recipients embody the rare combination of strategic vision, technical innovation, and humanitarian outlook that the award seeks to promote.

Award winners are recommended by a committee of representatives of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), and EDUCAUSE, and selected by the chief executives of the three organizations. Guidelines for submitting a nomination are detailed below.

David Rosenthal has made preprints of two important new papers available. One is called "Economics of Long Term Digital Storage" and is available at

This paper extends his earlier work on the costs of long-term digital storage; I heard a summary of the findings at the Library of Congress sponsored Storage Architectures Symposium last week, and I think it's definitely the most sophisticated model we have to to date of these costs. I'm very hopeful that David will be able to join us for the fall CNI member meeting to present (and perhaps even update) these findings.

The second paper looks at LOCKSS in conjunction with various cloud architectures, and actually offers a great deal of insight into the value of clouds for digital preservation more generally. It includes some of the first analysis I've seen of Amazon's new Glacier long-term storage option as part of a digital preservation strategy. The paper can be found here:

"Discovery Informatics" is a broad term that is now seeing some use as a way of describing a series of issues that have been of ongoing interest to CNI: text mining for knowledge discovery; text markup, multimedia tagging, and metadata structures to facilitate text mining, linking and information retrieval , annotation frameworks, tools, and the implications of all of these developments for the scholarly publishing system in the broadest sense.

NSF sponsored a workshop on February 2-3, 2012 that, based on the report (I was not at the meeting) looked at many of these issues with particular emphasis on the perspectives of research coming out of the Artificial Intelligence and machine learning communities. The report can be found at

Duke University and Dartmouth College have been doing some fabulous work supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation over the past few years, looking deeply at institutional digital information management strategies. One of the most fascinating and unique aspects of this effort has been the way that they have worked in both a collaborative and comparative mode to gain insight into the challenges they face.

Duke and Dartmouth are holding a symposium on the afternoon of December 9, 2012, the Sunday before the Fall CNI Membership meeting, in Washington DC. This is a great opportunity for participants in the CNI meeting to learn about this important effort. The symposium is open to all, however: you do not need to be attending the CNI fall meeting to participate in the symposium.
