I share the call for proposals below for the 11th Computational Archival Science Workshop (part of the 2026 IEEE Big Data Conference), on behalf of program committee members Richard Marciano and Jane Greenberg. The workshop has brought together practitioners working in big data (and now AI) in libraries, archives, historical centers, etc., along with researchers, and across iSchools, as well as digital humanities and computer science programs. Longtime members of the CNI community may recall our deep involvement in and support of the LIS Education and Data Science Integrated Network Group (LEADING), designed to prepare a diverse, nation-wide cohort of LIS doctoral students and early to mid-career librarians for data science endeavors; several participants from that program are involved with this event, including mentors and previous fellows.

We're now accepting proposals for the summer 2026 edition of the CNI Pre-Recorded Project Briefing Series. More information about this year-round program is available on the CNI website .

Proposals may be submitted at: https://www.cni.org/resources/pbvs/submit-a-proposal

Briefings should focus on a timely topic or on a project related to digital information. We especially invite submissions on recent reports and updates on projects, programs, or organizations that may have reported at CNI in the past. We recommend that these videos run no more than 15-20 minutes, though we leave this to the presenters’ discretion.

Anyone may propose a project briefing, including those from non-member institutions and organizations.

Today, we released the spring 2026 edition of CNI's Pre-Recorded Project Briefing Series ; we created this series to keep you connected to innovative projects year-round, and this latest collection of five videos showcases some exciting work happening across our community.

We invite you to submit an expression of interest to serve on the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Steering Committee.

Now is an especially impactful time to serve! With the leadership transition this past year, we're actively thinking about our strategic direction, where to focus and how to best serve, convene, and connect our membership community. The Steering Committee plays a central role in that conversation, and we're looking for a new at-large member to join us. The deadline to express interest is Monday, May 11.

We're especially eager to hear from people from membership institutions with perspectives that aren’t yet well represented on the committee.

What’s involved? The Steering Committee helps guide CNI’s program and organizational direction through quarterly meetings: three online and one in D.C. (travel is funded). Between meetings, we’ll occasionally ask for your input on strategy, messaging, and program planning. Members are also expected, though not required, to attend CNI’s two yearly in-person meetings at their own expense. The appointment runs three years, from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029.

CNI is delighted to sponsor the next Designing Libraries Conference, along with NC State University Libraries and Tom Hickerson, Conference Founder. The conference will be hosted by University of Pittsburgh on October 18-20, 2026. Visit the conference website to sign up to receive an alert when registration opens. The Paul Evan Peters Scholarship was established to honor and perpetuate the memory of CNI's founding executive director Paul Evan Peters (1947-1996). The scholarship is awarded every two years to students pursuing graduate studies in the information sciences, librarianship, or closely related field, that advance the frontiers of digital information and technology.

We’re delighted to announce that CNI and the Association of Research Libraries have released a new report by Karen Estlund (a CNI Steering Committee member) and Cynthia Hudson Vitale (a CNI Member Representative): Strategic Implications of AI Futures for Research Libraries: Workshop Report from the Strategic Implications Workshop, Futurescape Libraries: Mapping Possibilities for Tomorrow’s Information Hubs.

The report is designed to support leaders as they consider how advances in AI may affect the roles, responsibilities, and future direction of research libraries.

Highest consideration will be given to candidates whose application materials can directly address the following selection criteria, to demonstrate intellectual and personal qualities consistent with those of Paul Evan Peters: A commitment to the use of digital information and advanced technology to enhance scholarship, intellectual productivity, and public life An interest in the civic responsibilities of information professionals, and a commitment to democratic values A positive and creative approach to overcoming personal, technological, and bureaucratic challenges Humor, vision, humanity, and imagination

A new report is now available that explores how artificial intelligence can help address the major challenge of the rapidly growing volume of born-digital government records (emails, PDFs, spreadsheets, audiovisual files, and social media records). "Sifting the Digital Heap: A scoping study of AI for government archives – access, backlogs, and responsible practice ” draws on workshops organized in collaboration with the UK Cabinet Office and 27 interviews with stakeholders across the United Kingdom and the United States; the study examines how AI can support the accessibility and management of digital government records.

This research forms part of the GLOW (Government Records and AI) initiative, led by Professor Lise Jaillant at Loughborough University in collaboration with the UK Cabinet Office. It builds on the LUSTRE project (Unlocking our Digital Past with Artificial Intelligence), that explores how AI can improve preservation, accessibility, and use of born-digital government archives, and is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council in the UK.

The CNI Spring 2026 Membership Meeting is just around the corner, and we're excited to share an early look at what's in store.

We’ll start the meeting with a plenary on a topic that's top of mind for many of us right now: AI implementation strategies across libraries, campuses, and systems. Rebekah Cummings (University of Utah) will lead a conversation with practitioners bringing on-the-ground perspectives from Montana State University, University of Oklahoma, and the University of California.

Beyond the plenary, we have a rich lineup of project briefings taking shape. The preliminary list is available on the meeting website , and full session descriptions, a detailed schedule, and more plenary details are coming soon.

The CNI team and Steering Committee look forward to a great few days with our community in April!
