Keep in Mind: Anyone may propose a project briefing: you need not be affiliated with a member organization to propose a session. The meeting will be held entirely in person; presenters are expected to register and speak in person except in very unusual circumstances. Speakers are invited to attend the entire meeting (there is no registration fee), though they (or their organizations) are responsible for their own expenses. Project briefings are typically 30-minute to one-hour sessions. We also accept proposals for lightning round presentations (limited to five minutes, one presenter) We intend to record all sessions and to make the videos openly available after the meeting. In some exceptional cases, we may accept a session that is not recorded at the request of presenters.

Project briefings (presentations) address state-of-the-art developments, issues of interest to the membership, a timely topic , or a specific project related to networked information content and technologies, particularly those that are cross-institutional or of broad interest to the community. Project briefings include information about a project’s goals, progress, and lessons learned, time for discussion, and perhaps demonstrations. Issue-oriented briefings include background information on a CNI-related topic and more time for general discussion with the audience.

The 4th Global Research Platform Workshop (4GRP) will take place October 9-10, 2023 in Limassol, Cyprus and is co-located with the 19th IEEE International Conference on e-Science. Edition Guide Coalition for Networked Information Pre-Recorded Project Briefing Series August 2023

In the August 2023 edition of CNI’s Pre-Recorded Project Briefing Series , six contributed videos address current digital information issues. This edition guide provides a brief overview of each presentation; click through to the project briefing pages to watch the videos and see more session-specific details and resources.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology Special Publication (SP) 800-171, Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations, outlines security standards for the protection of sensitive information; these are seeing increasing use in higher education settings both for research data and in other contexts. An EDUCAUSE working group published a toolkit to help higher education institutions cope with challenges posed by the standards. Duke University’s Jay Gallman (a toolkit author), in conversation with CNI Director Clifford Lynch, discusses the implications of these higher education standards and the toolkit’s use in The EDUCAUSE SP800-171 Toolkit Initiative .

In Research Findings from the Building a National Finding Aid Network (NAFAN) Project , Chela Weber synthesizes OCLC’s research on end user and contributor needs in finding aid aggregations and evaluation of existing finding aid data.Led by the California Digital Library, and with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the project is designed to build the foundation for a national archival finding aid network.

Ithaka S+R in partnership with JSTOR Labs has just released an interesting research report "Of Meetings and Members: The Interconnected Future of Conferences and Scholarly Societies" on the future of conferences and scholarly societies, and how these are interconnected. This work, with funding from the Alfred Sloan Foundation, discusses a series of conversations with a cohort of some 17 scholarly societies (both STEM and humanities/social sciences) about the the future shape of scholarly meetings (virtual, in-person, or various types of hybrid event) based substantially on experience navigating the pandemic and the immediate post-pandemic environment, and how choices here connect to the future roles, membership, and financial viability of scholarly societies.

I share below an invitation to join the August 24th open call of the EDUCAUSE Research Computing and Data Community Group (RCD CG), to learn about the "Scholarly Communication Infrastructure Guide: Buy, Build, or Partner ” (developed by the Higher Education Leadership Initiative for Open Scholarship, or HELIOS), and how four research universities are working across campus units (Office of Compliance, Libraries, Research and IT) to support open data sharing and public access compliance using the guide.
