On March 3 CNI is going to host a small workshop to develop a near term agenda for work needed to improve security and privacy in systems related to scholarly communication and access to scholarly information resources. The focus will be largely technical, and will emphasize setting an agenda for various groups to address needs and problems, rather than details of how to solve specific problems. I've deliberately left the agenda scoped rather broadly , and I want to look at everything from encouraging wider and more routine use of HTTPS to hardening some popular protocols like OAI-PMH. Technical identity management related issues are also in scope, as are some discussions about appropriate levels of assurance.

We'll meet in Washington DC from 10AM-3PM on Tuesday, March 3. CNI will provide refreshments and lunch, but we will not cover travel expenses.

This will be a small workshop, and we will do our best to balance for different perspectives. If you are interested in attending, please send an email to Joan Lippincott (joan@cni.org) with a brief summary of the expertise and perspective you would bring to the meeting. Given that the meeting is only about a month away, I'll send out a first batch of acceptances by Feb 13, and after than respond to later applications as they come in. I'll provide more detailed logistical information with acceptances.

There will be a public report from the meeting, and for those who cannot attend, suggestions and comments are welcome going into the meeting.

What are some ways that libraries can leverage the Web to make their collections more broadly discoverable and accurately represented? This presentation, from CNI's December 2014 member meeting, features speakers with experience using Linked Open Data and improved semantic data to enhance discoverability of and interactions with library collections on the Web. Tim Cole and Janina Sarol (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Ted Fons (OCLC), and Kenning Arlitsch (Montana State University) discuss the challenges they encountered and the knowledge they have gained in implementing new models for access and retrieval.

How can digital archiving practices be substantively incorporated into pedagogies and curricula targeting university students? How might digital archiving processes, including digitization, transcription, and metadata creation, be incorporated in higher education curricula, so as to create meaningful learning opportunities for students? These questions are addressed by Charlotte Nunes (Southwestern U.) and Mary Elings (UC Berkeley), as they draw on case studies from multiple projects to demonstrate how targeted, archives-based digital humanities projects can enhance research and pedagogy at different types of institutions.

This session, from CNI's December 2014 member meeting, also includes a presentation by Jen Wolfe and Tom Keegan (both of the University of Iowa) on a collaboration between library staff and IDEAL (Iowa Digital Engagement and Learning) faculty that extends a manuscript transcription crowd-sourcing project, DIY History, into the undergraduate classroom. Students not only work with primary source materials, but become part of the collaborative effort to build and enhance them.

Universities and libraries are increasingly moving to use the data streams created by their constituents in order to provide the best services and resources possible, but the use of this information challenges long-held principles with regard to privacy, confidentiality, informed consent, and other values. This presentation examines the role of libraries as producers and consumers of educational analytics, and proposes a framework of principles and best practices for the stewardship of these data throughout their lifecycle.

The proliferation of search engine optimization (SEO), Web analytics, and user tracking results in much greater leakage of user data across the Web, particularly into ad-sharing and social networks, while at the same time libraries seek to utilize these identical tools to construct their own content recommending and service integrations that make use of online libraries as seamless as other well-designed Internet sites, while generating new data that are increasingly susceptible to hacking.

Swords, Dragons, and Spells: Libraries and User Privacy, a project briefing presented at CNI's December 2014 member meeting, explored these conflicting privacy challenges and surveyed the real-world data environments that libraries are working in. Proposals are now being accepted for project briefings to be presented at CNI's Spring 2015 CNI Membership Meeting on April 13-14 1 in Seattle, Washington at The Westin Seattle.

Project briefings are 45-minute or one-hour sessions that focus on a discussion of a hot topic, or on a specific institutional/organizational project related to digital information. A limited number of project briefings are accepted.

About the session: For the last decade the higher education and research world has invested heavily in community source development efforts to identify alternatives to large-scale commercial software, and, in some cases, to create new kinds of software in advance of the emergence of a commercial marketplace. This conversation with three long-time leaders explores these developments and where they may be taking us in the near and longer terms, considering a broad range of issues, including stability and resilience, the shifting role of standards, and the implications of changes in the rate of innovation and deployment of innovation.

One of the most interesting conferences that I attended in 2014 was hosted by the Sloan School at MIT October 10-11, which looked at a wide range of technical and non-technical issues around the use of very large scale digital platforms (social media, sales, etc) to support experiments both for busines optimization and for other research purposes. This has become an extremely sophisticated area in ways that do not seem to be widely known.

An emerging trend that CNI has been highlighting for the past few years is the establishment of digital scholarship centers or labs in universities and colleges. We invited participation in a workshop to document the current centers and identify good practice, in April, 2014, and 24 institutions who had centers up and running responded to our call. Each participating center completed a template describing its mission, a key project, types of staff available, and services offered. The workshop included sessions on describing how the center had been established, the types of staff involved, the range of services, links to teaching and learning (as links to research were a given), and organizational issues.

We are releasing today our web resource on Digital Scholarship Centers that includes a report of the workshop, the slides associated with presentations given at the workshop, and the descriptions of centers contributed by each institution that participated. A report of the CNI Executive Roundtable Software as a Service and Cloud Based Applications, held at the CNI Spring 2014 Membership Meeting, is now available:

Background: There has been a major shift in how some of the largest companies in the software industry are offering their products to the higher education community. Some companies are encouraging institutions to license their software in the cloud and others are providing no choice. The pressure to access software from a provider’s cloud service, rather than from a locally hosted service, is becoming intense. In addition to standard desktop applications software, many universities have moved enterprise level systems cloud-hosted services. On the surface, this change may appear to be merely one of efficiency, but the move to cloud services has the potential to disrupt the ways in which institutions are able to manage their information and the information of their community. There are important procedural and policy questions that must be aired in addition to the financial and control discussions that usually take place when moving operations to the cloud. Roundtable participants discussed their experiences with cloud services, the policies and procedures they have put into place, and the opportunities and risks that they perceive in this environment.

Held at CNI’s membership meetings, CNI Executive Roundtables bring together a group of campus partners, usually senior library and information technology leaders, to discuss a key digital information topic and its strategic implications. The events build on the theme of collaboration that is at the foundation of the Coalition; they serve as a forum for frank, unattributed intra and inter-institutional dialogue on digital information issues and their organizational and strategic implications. In addition, CNI uses roundtable discussions to inform our ongoing program planning process.

A Guide to the Fall 2014 Coalition for Networked Information Membership Meeting

The Fall 2014 CNI Membership Meeting, to be held at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC on December 8 and 9, offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the "roadmap" to the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current developments in digital information. As always, we have strived to present sessions that reflect late-breaking developments and also take advantage of our venue in the Washington, DC area to provide opportunities to interact with policy makers and funders.

As usual, the CNI meeting proper is preceded by an optional orientation session for new attendees, both representatives of new member organizations and new representatives or alternate delegates from existing member organizations, at 11:30 AM; guests and presenters are also welcome. Refreshments are available for all at 12:15 PM on Monday, December 8. The opening plenary is at 1:15 PM and will be followed by three rounds of parallel breakout sessions. Tuesday, December 9, includes three additional rounds of parallel breakout sessions, lunch and the closing plenary, concluding around 3:30 PM. Along with plenary and breakout sessions, the meeting includes generous break time for informal networking with colleagues and a reception which will run until 7:15 PM on Monday evening, December 8, after which participants can enjoy a wide range of dining opportunities in Washington.

This is going to be one of our largest meetings to date both in terms of registration and the number of breakout sessions, so you'll have many opportunities to meet colleagues old and new. As part of our commitment to supporting leadership development within our community, we have once again invited the current Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) and Association of Research Libraries (ARL) fellows to join us.

Background: E-books are being deployed at scale; libraries are acquiring them as significant parts of their collections and textbooks are moving to digital formats in a variety of settings and models. A wide range of topics related to the use and management of e-books in research, teaching and learning were discussed during two separate convenings of this roundtable. Participants explored the myriad questions that these new directions raise for institutions, the strategies that institutions are using to make choices among the paths available, the stakeholders involved, and the new programs and projects that some CNI members are planning or have implemented.
