CNI jointly held a conference with Jisc, our UK partners, on "Opening Up Scholarly Communications" in Bristol, England on July 10, 2014. Among the topics on the program were "International Policy Developments and the Wider Environment of Open Scholarship," "Opening Up Scholarly Publications," "Opening Up Data," and "Infrastructure Requirements for Open Scholarship." The conference brought together leaders in the academic community in the UK and the US. A report and video interviews from the conference will be available by early fall and will be announced here.

In the highly dynamic Web environment, resources are continuously created, changed, deleted, and moved, and Web applications that leverage third party resources face the challenge of keeping in step with ubiquitous change. In ResourceSync: A Modular Framework For Web-Based Resource Synchronization, Los Alamos scientists Herbert Van de Sompel and Martin Klein describe a system that has been developed to synchronize resources. The ResourceSync framework specifies various modular capabilities that a repository can support in order to allow third party systems to remain synchronized with its evolving resources. The article is an expansion of a presentation we gave at the December 2013 CNI membership meeting. I know you will find the content and the visuals (photos, floorplans, etc.) to be of interest if your institution is planning a digital scholarship center.

As a follow-on, CNI held a small workshop on digital scholarship centers after the spring membership meeting, and we will be issuing a report and a variety of materials documenting centers by the end of the summer; we will announce the availability of this information here on cni-announce.

In From Fragmentation to Reaggregation: Revealing a “Virtual” Medieval Library with Manuscriptlink, Eric Johnson of The Ohio State University describes Manuscriptlink, a new digital humanities initiative that aims to reconstruct a “virtual” medieval library by collaborating with collections around the world to re-aggregate hundreds, if not thousands, of previously lost medieval volumes. The project will foster active interdisciplinary cooperation across the humanities as well as collaboration among numerous international institutions. A project designed to quantify temporal elements of the narrative structure of films, television shows, and texts, is the subject of Nora Dimmock's presentation Visualizing Temporal Narrative. The collaboration between the library's Digital Humanities Center and University of Rochester English Professor Joel Burges involves developing tools for data visualization and collection, and completing a digital project under the direction of Burges and Dimmock, who co-teach the semester-long class. This will be the tenth in the series of annual conferences; CNI has been a co-sponsor of these meetings since the beginning, and is very pleased to continue that collaboration. Session Description: The Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) protocol provides opportunities for third parties (libraries or library vendors) to create immersive experiences for a variety of learning management systems (LMS) (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle, Sakai). EBSCO, a provider of library databases and discovery services, has created an LTI-compliant tool that allows course instructors to build assigned reading lists without ever leaving the LMS. This talk includes a brief explanation of the LTI protocol (for those interested in building LTI tools), demonstration of how the EDS Reading List tool makes use of it to the benefit of course instructors, and discussion of how this technology can help libraries add value to the teaching and learning experience.

Session Description: A one-year planning grant was awarded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to study the feasibility of establishing Centers of Excellence (CoEs). This study recognizes CoEs as a means to provide new information services that libraries are increasingly expected to deliver in order to meet the needs of twenty-first century research, teaching, and learning. The study explored the characteristics of CoEs, what makes them successful, and the challenges commonly faced by centers. Study findings were presented during this breakout session, and preliminary recommendations for following a Centers of Excellence model in developing and delivering information services were also discussed.

A new article by CNI director Clifford Lynch appears in the latest issue of EDUCAUSE Review. In "The 'Digital' Scholarship Disconnect" Lynch responds to the question "How would you define digital scholarship?" We invite you to join the LSC Guide Webinar V: What Works: Important Questions for Technologies and Pedagogies in 21st Century Learning Commons on Monday, June 23 at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

The designers of our active learning spaces are often not the people who teach or learn in them. Well-intended technology and design choices pay off in some cases and sit dusty in others. An intentional approach to design is needed that takes into account both specialized uses of the space and generic uses, especially for informal learning spaces. After an analysis of some learning spaces planning issues, we will look at a series of concrete examples at the University of Pennsylvania of gadgets, software-based and furniture-based technologies. For each, we will ask - why did we choose to implement them? How did we use them? Did they work as expected? How did our usage choices inform the next moment of decision-making? In the spirit of appreciative inquiry and building on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) literature, we will abstract out some ideas for extrapolation.

Session Description: A number of approaches to providing authoritative researcher identifiers have emerged, but they tend to be limited by discipline, affiliation or publisher. This talk provides an overview of an OCLC Research task group's analysis of a complex ecosystem of systems and institutions that provide, aggregate and use researcher and name authorities: researcher identifier systems. The presentation reflects on the state of the practice and on the remaining challenges to the integration of researcher identifiers into the systems and practices of libraries, universities, funders, and publishers.

E-Textbook Initiatives in Libraries and IT Organizations Glenda Morgan & Milind Basole (UIUC), Pat Reid (Purdue), and Todd Grappone (UCLA)

Session Description: A lot of attention has recently been paid to library publishing initiatives around scholarly works and research. Less attention however has been given to work that is happening in both libraries and information technology (IT) organizations around publishing of e-textbooks and other instructional resources. These materials take a number of different formats: some are open, some involve copyrighted material, they use a number of different technical platforms with a number of different affordances. This panel illustrates some of the variety of different initiatives occurring around the country on e-textbook publishing in libraries and IT. The presentation highlights the available opportunities and the progress being made as well as the challenges. Despite these challenges the session includes an argument for an increased role of both libraries and IT organizations in publication of original instructional materials in the form of e-textbooks.

Over the last few months the Obama administration has been conducting a number of public sessions (at NYU, UC Berkeley, and MIT) on issues around big data and privacy. There's now a page up on the White House web site which collects material on all these sessions, the administration's Big Data report, a related report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) and some summaries of the input the administration has been hearing. Lots of interesting material here (I have not been through it all yet):
