On Monday, June 29, from 1-2pm Eastern Time, EDUCAUSE Live! will feature Joan Lippincott, Associate Executive Director of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), speaking on "What to Do While Your Building or Renovation Project Is On Hold". This session will describe a number of low or no-cost strategies for moving institutions toward their overall goals for new learning spaces, particularly in libraries and computing centers, while waiting for the actual construction or renovation. In the process, these strategies may help campuses clarify what they hope the new spaces will accomplish, assist units in being able to implement new, user- driven services as soon as the new spaces are occupied, and forge new campus partnerships.

The University of California Berkeley Information Services and Technology group has made available the results from a large-scale study of Collaborative Tools that they have undertaken as part of an extensive campus wide strategy development and implementation. I think that many other CNI member organizations will find this material to be a valuable resource, and I wanted to share the pointer. See

On Thursday, May 21, Eduserve is holding a free symposium on the Future of Identity and Access Management for Research in London. There will be a free video stream of this symposium available for those who can't be there in person. I've reproduced the detailed information from Andy Powell at Eduserve below. In July 2008 the EDUCAUSE Campus Cyberinfrastructure Initiative, partnering with the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation, hosted a workshop in Indianapolis dealing with consistency and coherence in cyberinfrastructure services from the local campus to national and international levels. I was fortunate to be able to attend part of these discussions, which I found very helpful in understanding how campus strategies might integrate with national cyberinfrastructure planning.

Over the last two years I've had the opportunity of participating in the discussions of a wonderful Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Working Group on Special Collections led by Alice Prochaska of Yale University. This working group has now released what I think is an enormously helpful report that will advance thinking about how to intellectually position research library special collections in the broad context, as well as thoughtfully considering several dimensions of the interactions between information technology and special collections. A Guide to the Spring 2009 Coalition for Networked Information Task Force Meeting

The Spring 2009 CNI Task Force meeting, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 6 and 7, offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at Task Force member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the customary "roadmap" to the sessions at the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current developments in networked information.

As usual, the CNI meeting proper is preceded by an optional orientation session for new attendees - both representatives of new member organizations and new representatives or alternate delegates from existing member organizations - at 11:30 AM; guests are also welcome. Refreshments are available for all at 12:15 PM on Monday, April 6. The opening plenary is at 1:15 PM and will be followed by two rounds of parallel breakout sessions. Tuesday, April 7, includes additional rounds of parallel breakout sessions, lunch and the closing keynote, concluding around 3:30 PM. Along with plenary and breakout sessions, the meeting includes generous break time for informal networking with colleagues and a reception which will run until 7:15 PM on the evening of Monday, April 6, after which participants can enjoy a free evening in Minneapolis.

While there were a number of excellent sessions, I particularly reccomend the session from 1045am to 1215pm on February 26 (the first day), which was titled "Online Communities and the Institution" and explored the very important issues of managing a public dialog about materials held in cultural heritage organizations, and included some outstanding presentations.
