The Paul Evan Peters Award recognizes the most notable and lasting international achievements related to high performance networks and the creation and use of information resources and services that advance scholarship and intellectual productivity. Past winners have been Daniel E. Atkins (2008), inaugural director of the National Science Foundation's Office of Cyberinfrastructure; Paul Ginsparg (2006), founder of arXiv, an e-print archive for articles in the sciences; Brewster Kahle (2004), founder and chairman of the board of the Internet Archive; "father of the Internet" Vinton Cerf (2002); and Tim Berners-Lee (2000), inventor of the World Wide Web. All recipients embody the rare combination of strategic vision, technical innovation, and humanitarian outlook that the award seeks to promote.

Award winners are recommended by a committee of representatives of the Association of Research Libraries, the Coalition for Networked Information, and EDUCAUSE, and selected by the chief executives of the three organizations. Guidelines for submitting a nomination are detailed below.

I wanted to share the announcement for the upcoming SUN PASIG meeting that will be taking place in San Francisco October 7-9, immediately following the iPres conference. I've participated in several of these meetings, and they are in my experience quite unique: they deal with serious large scale digital preservation and archiving issues from a very pragmatic, systems engineering-oriented perspective. I'd urge CNI-announce readers interested in these topics to at least take a look at the agenda (which is at https://meeting-reg.com/sunpasig/ ) to get a sense of the meeting. I'll be giving a short talk on Friday, October 9 (not yet on the agenda, as just very recently confirmed).

The Sun Preservation and Archiving Special Interest Group (PASIG) meeting will be taking place October 7-9, 2009 in San Francisco. Thought-leaders and solution providers in the areas of data curation, data management of eScience content, preservation, repositories, and storage technologies will be presenting Wednesday and Thursday. Collaborative working groups are scheduled on Friday.

“The Right to Information Access”

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) are co-hosting a Forum, “An Age of Discovery: Distinctive Collections in the Digital Age.” It will be held October 15–16, 2009, in Washington, DC, immediately following the ARL Membership Meeting.

The Forum builds on the work of the ARL Special Collections Working Group. The goal is to focus attention on opportunities available in the digital environment for leveraging the strengths of special collections, making them more widely accessible. The co-hosts seek to bring together librarians, archivists, and others with responsibilities for stewarding special and distinctive resources, and to identify strategies for advancing this goal.

Intended Audience

The forum is open to all. In particular, directors of research and academic libraries, archives, and historical societies are encouraged to attend, along with other staff members who have responsibilities that encompass special collections.

On June 3 I had the opportunity to do a webcast for the American Library Association's Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), in which I discussed a number of issues related to digital preservation, stewardship of the cultural record, and the impact of the recent economic problems. In the webcast, I briefly discuss some of the fine work that Professor David Kirsch at the University of Maryland has been doing to preserve business records as part of the Library of Congress NDIIPP program. A few days after doing the webcast, I had an opportunity to read his article in the journal Library Trends, "The Record of Business and the Future of Business History: Establishing A Public Interest in Private Business Records" (Library Trends, Volume 57 Number 3, Winter 2009, pp. 352-370, online at http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/library_trends/toc/lib.57.3.html but access protected; note that the entire issue is on the LC NDIIPP program and is likely to be of interest to many CNI-announce readers). Kirsch's paper forms an excellent complement to my discussion of issues surrounding business records in the webcast, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in this topic.
