Last Call to Register for ARL/CNI Forum on Enhancing Graduate Education—Deadline September 28

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) are co-sponsoring a forum on “Enhancing Graduate Education: A Fresh Look at Library Engagement.” The forum will be held Friday, October 12, 2007, following the ARL Membership Meeting at the Washington Marriott Hotel in Washington DC. The deadline to register is this Friday, September 28 (see below for registration information).

Three distinct program elements are planned for this day-long forum: • An overview of the state of graduate education, recommendations from the Council of Graduate Schools, and findings from a trio of library field studies focused on the academic and research behaviors of graduate students. • Perspectives from three graduate students. • Concurrent breakout sessions for in-depth audience discussion of the implications for enhancing library space, services, and resources for graduate students.

In mid-August, the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) held a Focus Session on "Being Net Savvy: Developing Skills for a Rapidly Changing World." The resources from the meeting are now online. They include session materials, podcasts, and speaker interviews. Among the presentations were "Prisms around Student Learning: Information Literacy, IT Fluency, and Media Literacy" by Craig Gibson of George Mason U., "Faculty Development and the Net Savvy Student" by Bradley Cohen of U. Minnesota, and "Learning 2.0: Staff Development for a 2.0 World" by Jeff Trzeciak of McMaster U. Several videos of students discussing aspects of being net savvy are included, including one that is an interview I did of my college student daughter, Meg Lippincott.

I want to bring three recent publications of potential interest to the attention of CNI-announce readers. The first is a document issued by the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) in August 2007 titled "Leadership Under Challenge: Information Technology R&D in a Competitive World", which is a look at the Federal networking and Information Technology R&D Program in a broad context. The second is a special issue of the CODATA Data Sciences Journal edited by Paul Uhlir of the U.S. National Academies dealing with open data issues. Here's the summary of the issue that Paul sent out:

NISO to Hold Forum on Understanding the Data Around Us Amigos Cosponsoring Two-Day Event on Gathering and Analyzing Usage Data

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and Amigos Library Services will host a forum on Understanding the Data Around Us: Gathering and Analyzing Usage Data, to be held November 1-2 at the Magnolia Hotel in Dallas, Texas. This two-day event asks library and information service providers to think about what kinds of usage data—for e-resources, print, and more—can be used to help improve the provision of information services, what data might be missing, and ways all parties involved (libraries, publishers, aggregators, and system vendors) can best use the data collected. The event includes speakers who will discuss issues of gathering, analyzing, and applying usage data, and encourages the audience to engage with questions of their own.

Topics to be addressed include:

• Environmental scan on usage data: What data is being collected and why? What's missing? • COUNTER: Learn about COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of NeTworked Electronic Resources) and how the Codes of Practice improve the reliability of online usage statistics. • Library Perspective: How is data collected and what administrative questions does it answer? • Publisher Perspective: How is data collected and disseminated, and how does it affect sales and pricing? • Aggregator Perspective: How is data compiled from disparate content providers, and what reporting is being done? • SUSHI: Learn how the SUSHI (Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative) protocol can automate the retrieval of COUNTER and other usage statistics. • Case Study: The large-scale harvesting of electronic resources usage data in a collaboration between a data aggregator, software provider, and academic library. • Next steps: Once you have data, what do you do with it? This 2007 ECAR research study is a longitudinal extension of the 2004, 2005, and 2006 ECAR studies of students and information technology. The study, which reports noticeable changes from previous years, is based on quantitative data from a spring 2007 survey and interviews with 27,846 freshman, senior, and community college students at 103 higher education institutions. It focuses on what kinds of information technologies these students use, own, and experience; their technology behaviors, preferences, and skills; how IT impacts their experiences in their courses; and their perceptions of the role of IT in the academic experience.

International M-Libraries Conference - Only 3 weeks to close of registration

Only 3 weeks to register for the First International M-Libraries Conference, registration will close on September 30th.  This conference is being hosted at the Open University in Milton Keynes on 13th and 14th November in collaboration with colleagues from Athabasca University in Canada. The aim is to focus on work being carried out around the world to bring library resources and services to people via mobile phones and other handheld devices.

NISO E-Resource Management Forum to be Held September 24-25: Registration Now Open

Highlighting the issues of implementers, NISO is hosting with the Bibliographical Center for Research (BCR) a two-day forum on electronic resource management. Presentations designed to answer pressing questions about the impact of ERMs on internal management and workflow will come from all major sectors of the NISO community. NISO’s E-Resource Management Forum: The What, Why, and How for Managing E-Resources will take place September 24-25, 2007 at The Magnolia Hotel in Denver, Colorado. Registration is now open.

The how-to character of the Forum will provide practical guidance both to librarians currently implementing electronic resources management systems and those weighing ERM options. Subscription agents, ILS vendors, and publishers will also have a rare opportunity to integrate their perspectives and questions into sessions that examine ERM selection and operation.

Beginning with discussions of the benefits and uses of ERMs, as well as selection criteria, the sessions move to project-specific implementation, including workflow/staffing, usage, reports, and case studies.

The Fall 2007 CNI Task Force Meeting will be held on December 10-11 (Monday and Tuesday) at the Renaissance Washington D.C. Hotel; registration materials were sent recently to designated Task Force representatives. Please note that the meeting and hotel registration deadline is Monday, November 5. A podcast of the closing keynote address by Clifford Lynch delivered on August 8 at the 2007 Seminars On Academic Computing in Snowmass Village, CO is now available. The talk is entitled "The Institutional Challenges of Cyberinfrastructure and E-Research."

Abstract: It has become clear that scholarly practice and scholarly communication across a wide range of disciplines are being transfigured by a series of developments in IT and networked information. While this has been widely discussed at the national and international levels in the context of large-scale advanced scientific projects, the challenges at the level of individual universities and colleges may prove more complex and more difficult. This presentation will focus on these challenges, as well as the development of truly institution-wide strategies that can support and advance the promises of e-research.

The morning will open with a keynote address delivered by Suzanne Ortega, Vice Provost and Dean, the Graduate School, University of Washington, and a member of the Advisory Committee that authored the Council of Graduate Schools 2007 report, Graduate Education: The Backbone of American Competitiveness and Innovation. Ortega will provide an overview of the state of graduate education and highlight recommendations from the Council of Graduate Schools report.

The CTWatch Quarterly has just made available the August 2007 issue, which deals with Scholarly Communications and Cyberinfrastructure, guest edited by Lee Dirks and Tony Hey of Microsoft. It includes articles by a number of distinguished authors, including Paul Ginsparg, Timo Hannay, Herbert Van de Sompel and Carl Lagoze, and Peter Suber , as well as a piece I wrote on the changing shape of the scholarly article.
