I am very pleased to be able to invited you to attend the 3rd annual International Conference on the Universal Digital Library. It will be held here at Carnegie Mellon University of November 2,3,and 4th. The website is http://tera-3.ul.cs.cmu.edu/icudl2007/. The milliion book partners will also have their annual meeting during the conference.

The meeting will include a number of invited speakers, many contributed papers and presentations, some of which will be subsequently published in international journals, and an opportunity to meet digital library advocates from Australia, China, Egypt, India, and other countries. At past conferences, many interesting new ideas have been discussed.

Dr. Liz Lyon, who is well known to many in the CNI community for her work on the EBank project and her roles at UKOLN and the UK Digital Curation Center, has just done a new report for the JISC dealing with data curation roles and responsibilities that should be extremely timely not just for the UK but for those elsewhere struggling with similar questions. The data deluge is upon us, and now is the right time to be taking action to ensure that we are not overwhelmed. A new report "Dealing with Data" charts a practical path forward and will help all stakeholders plan the next steps in data curation. The report, by Dr Liz Lyon, Director, UKOLN and Associate Director, DCC, is strategically positioned to provide a bridge between the Research Information Network's high-level Framework of Principles and Guidelines for the stewardship of research data, and practitioner-focussed technical development work.

At the upcoming American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Washington DC, CNI Executive Director Clifford Lynch will participate in the program “Museums, Libraries, Archives: A Convergence,” on Sunday June 24, 1:30-3:30 p.m. CNI Associate Executive Director Joan Lippincott will speak on new technologies and teaching trends as part of the ACRL Women’s Studies Section program “Once upon a Furl in a Podcast Long Ago: Using New Technologies to Support Library Instruction,” on Monday June 25, 8:00–11:30 a.m.

CALL FOR PAPERS 3rd International Digital Curation Conference Curating our Digital Scientific Heritage: a Global Collaborative Challenge 12-13 December 2007 – Renaissance Hotel, Washington DC, USA.

I wanted to share this announcement on the FIrst International Digital Preservation Challenge (and Prizes) from Digital Preservation Europe. It's designed to bring new ideas and new participants into the digital preservation community, and seems like a splendid idea. Note that the Challenge is open to entrants worldwide, not just from Europe.

DigitalPreservationEurope (DPE) is delighted to announce its first international Digital Preservation Challenge.

I wanted to share this announcement, which I picked up from Bill St. Arnaud of CANARIE's invaluable CAnet-news list (see http://lists.canarie.ca/mailman/listinfo/news). It's an NSF solicitation for Virtual Organizations to support Engineering disciplines and very much part of the overall cyberinfrastructure agenda; however, it's listed on the Engineering page of the NSF web site rather than the Office of Cyberinfrastructure page (at least when I last looked) so some CNI-announce readers may have missed this. The podcasts include conversations with plenary speakers Stephen Murray of Columbia University and Marc Smith of Microsoft Research, as well as interviews with the incoming Executive Director of the Digital Library Federation Peter Brantley and Jack McCredie of the University of California, Berkeley. These recordings are designed to function as an extension of the meeting, complementing the standard program, and providing an opportunity for the broader CNI community to hear from some of our key presenters and attendees.

The Advisory Committee for this standard is seeking broad community review of it from a technical viewpoint as well as for its value in collection cataloging and access/sharing. 10th International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations Uppsala, Sweden, June 13-16, 2007 http://epc.ub.uu.se/etd2007/ ETD2007 - Added Value for E-theses This meeting offers scope for an exchange of experience and consolidation of cooperation in the field of electronic theses and dissertations at local, national and international levels. Under the general theme "Added Value for E-theses", ETD 2007 is organised around two main themes: "Integrating ETDs with institutional processes and practices" and "Value added services". The themes of the conference call for reflection on opportunities for joint effort amongst various players in the production and information chain, both inside and outside our universities.

To allow the specific developments relating to ETDs to be considered in context, we are delighted to welcome a number of excellent speakers including: Gregory Crane, Tufts University, USA; Clifford Lynch, Coalition for Networked Information, USA and Peter Murray-Rust, Cambridge University, UK.

Last week the JISC and NSF co-sponsored a workshop to discuss issues involving data intensive research, repositories, cyberinfrastructure and related issues. While the report of the meeting is still under development (and I will announce its availability here when it's out), there is a rich collection of position papers, presentations and similar materials already available at the workshop web site.

Workflow management in complex distributed environments has become a growing issue in the cyberinfrastructure/e-research context. I recently read a very useful report of a 2006 NSF workshop on this topic, which includes some provocative speculation about the interactions between documenting workflows and scholarly communication. In late September 2006 NSF sponsored a workshop hosted at the University of Michigan School of Information exploring the history and theory of infrastructure development, with a focus on what lessons could be drawn to help in planning the development of cyberinfrastructure. A report from the workshop became available in late January, 2007, but does not seem to have been as widely circulated as it deserves to be. With apologies to those already familiar with this, I wanted to take the opportunity to share the pointer to the report and other materials about the conference, all of which can be found at:

A Guide to the Spring 2007 Coalition for Networked Information Task Force Meeting

The Spring 2007 CNI Task Force meeting, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona on April 16 and 17, offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at Task Force member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the "roadmap" to the sessions at the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current developments in networked information.

As usual, the CNI meeting proper is preceded by an optional orientation session for new attendees - both representatives of new member organizations and new representatives or alternate delegates from existing member organizations - at 11:30 AM; guests are also welcome. Refreshments are available for all at 12:15 PM on Monday, April 16. The opening plenary is at 1:15 PM and will be followed by two rounds of parallel breakout sessions. Tuesday, April 16, includes additional rounds of parallel breakout sessions, lunch and the closing keynote, concluding around 3:30 PM. Along with plenary and breakout sessions, the meeting includes generous break time for informal networking with colleagues and a reception which will run until 7:15 PM on the evening of Monday, April 16, after which participants can enjoy a free evening in Phoenix.

The CNI meeting agenda is subject to last minute changes, particularly in the breakout sessions, and you can find the most current information on our Web site, www.cni.org, and on the announcements board near the registration desk at the meeting.
