Topics included access and preservation, how users are changing, open access, e-theses, massive digitization projects, and resource discovery. Additional presentations will be added to the website as they become available.

The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) is pleased to announce the selection of Bryce Benton as the 2006 recipient of the Paul Evan Peters Fellowship for graduate study in the information sciences or librarianship. Mr. Benton is currently in the masters program at the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences. The fellowship, which was established to honor the memory of CNI founding Executive Director, Paul Evan Peters, recognizes outstanding scholarship and intellectual rigor, and also civic responsibility, democratic values, and imagination.

Mr. Benton has demonstrated his talents through participation in various challenging projects for which he has won accolades from faculty and colleagues. Most recently, as the technical lead for an institutional repository pilot project involving the DSpace open source system at the University of North Texas, Benton played a key role in the system installation, and he was also the developer behind the user-friendly interface for accessing the repository.

Open source systems are of particular interest to Benton: he is a collaborator on a project involving learning objects, as well as participating in the development of a framework for community collaboration among metadata professionals using the open source content management system Drupal. He has also been working on a pilot implementation of the Sakai online learning management system at the University of North Texas.

Described by his professors as personable, enthusiastic and as someone who possesses a “volunteering spirit,” Benton has demonstrated himself to be committed to a greater good; he regularly offers his time and expertise to projects that might benefit from his experience. William Moen, Associate Professor in the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas, comments, "As a research assistant and student, Bryce exhibits qualities of innovative thinking, collaborative engagement, eagerness to share his knowledge, and a talent for learning and adapting solutions to interesting projects. I think these are qualities Paul valued, and I think he would be pleased by the selection of Bryce as the recipient of this award offered in his name."

Proposed Legislation on Orphan Works: Solving the Problem or Escalating the Crisis?

The upcoming SPARC-ACRL forum on emerging issues in scholarly communication, to be held during the American Library Association’s annual meeting in New Orleans, will explore questions related to the field of Open Data. The forum will feature experts who are familiar with the issues associated with Open Data and known for their analysis of the evolving scholarly communication scene. Speakers will include: * Christopher Greer, Cyberinfrastructure Advisor, Office of the Assistant Director for Biological Sciences, National Science Foundation * Robert Hanisch, Project Manager, US National Virtual Observatory, Space Telescope Science Institute * Clifford Lynch, Executive Director, Coalition for Networked Information As Open Data moves to the forefront of scholarly communication, librarians, administrators, and researchers will be responsible for considering new access policies for data and data curation issues. This forum, to be held on Saturday, June 24th from 4:00 - 5:30PM in the Morial Convention Center, Room 356 – 357, will introduce Open Data as an emerging focus, explore the challenges of managing the data deluge, and aid participants in crafting their own digital data preservation and curation policies. Reservations are not required.

On Sunday, June 25th, Cliff Lynch will serve on a panel during LITA's Top Technology Trends discussion. The panelists will describe changes and advances in technology that they see having an impact on the library world, and suggest what libraries might do to take advantage of these trends. The session will take place 1:30-3pm in the Sheraton New Orleans, Grand Ballrooms D/E.

The EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) has just released a new Bulletin, “Institutional Strategies and Policies for Electronic Theses and Dissertations” by CNI Associate Executive Director Joan Lippincott. The Bulletin (vol. 2006, issue 13) is intended to provide an overview for campus decision-makers who are considering development of an institutional or consortial electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) program. The bulletin describes key policy issues and the rationale for implementing an ETD program.

ECAR “provides timely research and analysis to help higher education leaders make better decisions about information technology.” They have many useful publications in their various series, which are generally available through membership. The June 7-8 conference at the National Library of Medicine allows you to network with the new players in scientific and technical information and provides insight into the new relationships and alliances forming in STI across the information lifecycle.  Join the key players to see what they are planning and doing in the new digital information environment.

On Monday, May 8, EDUCAUSE Live! will feature a 1-hour presentation by Dean Krafft, Principal Investigator for the NSDL Core Integration Project at Cornell University. 1-2pm Eastern Time. No charge, but registration required at . Abstract:

Since 2000, the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Core Integration team has been creating the infrastructure for a digital library of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics resources. That library now contains more than a million resources from approximately 100 collections. In this talk, Dean Krafft will give a short historical overview of the NSDL and describe the current NSDL community and participants. He will then review the technical underpinnings of NSDL 1.0, a library built on metadata harvesting, and describe some of the challenges encountered. For the past year, the project has been working on NSDL 2.0, a new version of the library built on the Fedora repository architecture. For the last part of the talk, Krafft will describe this new library architecture and explain how it supports creating context for science resources, how it enhances the selection and use of library materials, and what these capabilities mean for the users of the NSDL.
