The new IDEA awards recognize exemplary applications of high performance networking in research and education, and offer superb case studies in how these technologies can change the practices of scholarship. Call for Papers

The DTSL (Digital Tools Summit for Linguistics, http://www.ku.edu/pri/DTSL/) is a one-time workshop on digital tools and cyberinfrastructure development in linguistics, for language software engineers and computational linguists, as well as linguists. The workshop aims to facilitate new interdisciplinary collaboration to design and create digital tools specifically for linguistic analysis, and thereby stimulate new funding initiatives. During the workshop, participants will prioritize and draft tools and data structures. They will work largely in interest groups (e.g. in data annotation, migration, visualization, and resource interoperation) and for each interest area will prepare design sketches of and implementation plans for at least one tool. We particularly want to address the needs of non-technologically-oriented language researchers, simulating the development of truly useful, stable, cross-platform, open-source tools that are both small (e.g. Unicode conversion scripts) and large (e.g. a modular suite of linguistic data-analysis tools) in scope.

The Summit will take place June 22-23, 2006 at Michigan State University, in association with both the summer Linguistic Society of America meeting (http://www.lsadc.org/info/meet-summer06-cfp.cfm) and the E-MELD [Electronic Metastructures for Endangered Language Data] meeting ("Tools and Standards: The State of the Art," http://emeld.org/workshop/2006/); DTS-L and E-MELD will meet together on the morning of 22 June.

A Guide to the Spring 2006 Coalition for Networked Information Task Force Meeting

The Spring 2006 CNI Task Force meeting, to be held at the Hilton Crystal City Hotel in Arlington, Virginia on April 3-4 offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at Task Force member institutions, and highlight important developments at a national and international level. Here is the "roadmap" to the sessions at the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current developments in networked information.

Because of the way that CNI and its member organizations work together in a dynamic collaboration with tight timelines, we are able to present programs that we believe are unusually timely. Our venue for this meeting, in the Washington, DC area, also allows us to include a number of policy-oriented sessions with experts from the national policy arena.

As usual, the CNI meeting proper is preceded by an optional orientation session for new attendees - both representatives of new members and new representatives or alternate delegates from existing member organizations -- at 11:30 AM; guests are also welcome. Refreshments are available for all at 12:15 PM on Monday, April 3. The opening keynote is at 1:15 PM and will be followed by two rounds of parallel breakout sessions. Tuesday, April 4, includes additional rounds of parallel breakout sessions, lunch and the closing keynote, concluding around 3:30 PM. Along with plenary and breakout sessions, the meeting includes generous break time for informal networking with colleagues and a reception which will run till 7:15 PM on the evening of Monday, April 3, after which participants can enjoy a wide range of dining opportunities in the Washington area.

Manuscripts sought for LITA/Endeavor student writing award

The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to offer an award for the best unpublished manuscript submitted by a student or students enrolled in an ALA-accredited graduate program. Sponsored by LITA and Endeavor Information Systems, the award consists of $1,000, publication in LITA’s refereed journal, Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL) and a certificate. The deadline for submission of the manuscript is Friday, April 21, 2006. The purpose of the award is to recognize superior student writing and to enhance the professional development of students. The manuscript can be written on any aspect of libraries and information technology. Examples include digital libraries, metadata, authorization and authentication, electronic journals and electronic publishing, telecommunications, distributed systems and networks, computer security and intellectual property rights, technical standards, desktop applications, online catalogs and bibliographic systems, universal access to technology, library consortia and others. At the time the unpublished manuscript is submitted, the applicant(s) must be enrolled in an ALA-accredited program in library and information studies at the masters or Ph.D. level. To be eligible, applicants must follow the detailed guidelines and fill out the application form at www.lita.org. The award will be presented at the LITA President’s Program during the 2006 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.

The 9th International symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations, ETD 2006, will take place in Québec City, Canada, from June 7 to 10, 2006. ETD 2006 is the key international conference to attend in order to stay abreast of developments and trends in electronic theses and dissertations initiatives around the world.

Malcolm Brown, Director of Academic Computing at Dartmouth and I will be presenting a half-day preconference workshop "Innovative Designs for Teaching and Learning" at the Association of American Colleges & Universities conference "Learning and Technology: Implications for Liberal Education and the Disciplines" in Seattle, Washington on Thursday, April 20, 2006.

The workshop will include a presentation on learning space design, discussion of how pedagogical methods, technology applications, and new types of learning spaces can work in synergy, and activities that will encourage participants to think through how they can improve their own courses (if they are faculty) or provide infrastructure for improvements on campus (if they are administrators) by applying principles learned in the workshop and drawing on examples provided. Separate registration is required for the workshop.

The full conference runs from April 20-22, and includes many sessions of interest to CNI members, including some on e-portfolios, interactive instructional software, assessment, scientific literacy, classroom response systems, collaborations, and social software. It looks like an excellent program.

arXiv.org founder Paul Ginsparg will receive the Paul Evan Peters Award during the opening plenary session on April 3rd; following the award presentation Professor Ginsparg will deliver the Paul Evan Peters Lecture, "The Library of Babel (after Borges): Some reflections about what has happened over the past thirty years, and what might happen during the next five."

CNI is a co-operating organization for this conference; I've attended the last two years, and the conference has offered a very good, wide-ranging look at digital preservation and archiving issues. Applications for the Paul Evan Peters Fellowship are due April 14, 2006.

The Paul Evan Peters Fellowship was established to honor and perpetuate the memory of CNI's founding Executive Director. The fellowship is awarded every two years to a student pursuing graduate studies in librarianship, the information sciences, or closely related field, and who demonstrates intellectual and personal qualities consistent with those of Paul Evan Peters, including: --commitment to use of networked information to enhance scholarship, intellectual productivity and public life; --interest in civic responsibilities of networked information professionals and a commitment to democratic values and government accountability; --positive and creative approach to overcoming personal, technological, and bureaucratic challenges, and --humor, vision, humanity, and imagination.

The fellowship is in the amount of $2500 per year, to be awarded two consecutive years to a student in a graduate program.
