Many of you will know Alison Head, who gave a wonderful plenary session at CNI in 2017, and Project Information Literacy (PIL), which she leads. 2021 Virtual Digital Initiatives Symposium : April 26-29, 2021

Hosted by the University of San Diego’s Copley Library, the Digital Initiatives Symposium is an annual event featuring workshops, presentations, and keynote addresses from leaders in libraries’ digital ecosystems, including open access, institutional repositories, open educational resources, data management, digital scholarship and pedagogy, scholarly communications, linked data, digital humanities, web archiving, copyright, and more. For 2021, the DIS will be entirely virtual using the Zoom Webinar platform. We hope you can join us!

CNI has partnered with JISC in the UK for over twenty years to convene biannual meetings in the UK exploring parallel developments and contrasts among the two nations. Due to the pandemic, we postponed the July 2020 meeting till this year, and in 2021 we will be meeting virtually, which provides a much lower barrier-to-entry opportunity for US participants to join us for this conversation, which will examine the future of research and the roles that research libraries may play as catalysts for these developments.

The JISC-CNI Leaders Conference will take place virtually on July 7-9, 2021. I hope that you'll consider joining us.

The Next Generation Library Publishing Project, a collaboration among Educopia, the California Digital Library, and several other organizations (detailed in the link) and funded by the Acadia Foundation has just released a report titled "Library Publishing Infrastructure: Assembling New Solutions" that sheds some helpful light on the library publishing landscape and the implications of some of the tools and platforms that are now available within that landscape.

Meeting Roadmap A Guide to the Spring 2021 Coalition for Networked Information Membership Meeting

The Spring 2021 CNI Virtual Membership Meeting , to be held online March 15-26, offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the "roadmap" to the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of live and on-demand breakout sessions focusing on current issues in digital information. We decided to return to our traditional (pre-pandemic) meeting roadmap for this virtual event to provide some context and additional information about the program, particularly because of the pre-recorded briefings. We hope you will find it helpful as you navigate and prioritize the meeting’s extensive offerings. As always, we have strived to present sessions that reflect late-breaking developments and also take advantage of the online environment.

Over the past year, we have spent a good deal of time exploring the most useful formats for our virtual meetings, as these have evolved alongside the realities of Zoom fatigue, a seemingly never-ending and enticing supply of online event offerings, and the very heavy demands on people’s time and attention. We are grateful for the generous feedback and suggestions from members and attendees from our previous virtual meetings. Based on our judgment of this particular window in time and experience, for the spring 2021 meeting, only a small number of project briefings will take place live, and they will be held on March 15-19. The vast majority of project briefings will be pre-recorded, available on-demand throughout the meeting, to be explored at your leisure. We have left two days within the meeting timeframe entirely unscheduled, March 22-23, to provide you with an opportunity to explore the on-demand sessions, if convenient. In addition, for this meeting, we offer an expanded line-up of plenary sessions on topics we feel are particularly timely and/or strategic for the community as a whole; these will be live as well, to take place March 24-26. Unless the presenters have requested otherwise, all sessions will be recorded and subsequently available to the public; this includes the pre-recorded sessions.

I wanted to share this update on the 2021 International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC), which had been co-scheduled with the Research Data Alliance (RDA) 17th Plenary in Edinburgh, Scotland this April. The pandemic has required that these events be moved virtual, which has been a very complex process; thanks for your patience while all this has been sorted out. Registration is now open for both events, and I'll be giving my customary brief summary towards the end of the shortened IDCC meeting. I hope to "see" many of you at one or both of these meetings.

Registration is now open for two linked events in the world of data curation: the 16th International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC21) and the 17th Plenary of the Research Data Alliance, taking place during the week beginning Monday 19th April 2021. Registration for either event also allows you to attend a joint unconference which will bridge the interests of the two communities. All events will be taking place online only. We’re pleased to note that substantially reduced rates are available for both events for attendees from Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs.)

In preparation for the 2021 Horizon Report, EDUCAUSE seeks submissions of projects that illustrate the technologies and practices selected by the expert panel. Early last summer, I had the opportunity to participate, along with many other people, in a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center about expectations, fears and hopes for 2025 as society attempted to reach some kind of new equilibrium in light of the pandemic.

About ten days ago (somehow I missed the announcement, apologies!) the Pew Research Center released the first half of what promises to be a monumental look at the issues here; they received a huge number of very thoughtful responses to their questions, and have compiled them.

CNI is taking advantage of the affordances of the virtual meeting environment to remain as flexible, responsive and timely as possible in delivering our Spring 2021 Membership Meeting. While we are still finalizing a few things, I wanted to share the schedule (below) as it is developing, though we may still add a few sessions and speakers. We are very grateful for your patience, and for your contributions to the meeting.

A preliminary list of the planned project briefings (both synchronous and asynchronous) is now available at https://www.cni.org/mm/spring-2021/project-briefings-breakout-sessions-s21; we will be posting the schedule for the synchronous breakouts in the coming days. We have changed the time blocks for these slightly from our earlier announcement. Synchronous (live) project briefings will now run 1:00-5:00 PM EDT on March 15-16, and 4:00-5:00 PM EDT on March 17-19 (replacing the originally planned moderated panels, which we will not be doing this meeting). Pre-recorded videos will be available “on-demand” by March 15 and throughout the meeting and you are free to watch them anytime, though we have left March 22-23 as unscheduled and that may be a good time for you to explore pre-recorded materials, if you wish. We won’t make the pre-recorded sessions available to the public until the meeting is over.

Many CNI member institutions will be interested in this new version of the Learning Space Rating System (LSRS), put together by a highly experienced team. The LSRS "provides a set of measurable criteria to assess how well the design of classrooms supports and enables multiple modalities of learning and teaching, especially that of active learning.” An important update to earlier versions is a dedicated section on inclusion, which "takes a more systematic and thorough approach with a new framework that addresses physiological, cognitive, and cultural inclusion” compared with earlier versions. Many of the criteria described in those sections are highly relevant to library spaces, too. The Learning Space Rating System (LSRS), in its third edition since 2014, continues to provide a framework to measure the potential performance of learning spaces—that is, to assess what activities physical spaces enable learners and instructors to do in them. This latest version of the LSRS serves as a way to measure progress toward designing flexible and inclusive learning spaces that support multiple modalities of learning and teaching. We hope that it also provides the higher education community with a common language and method to document and share best practices in pursuit of that goal.

Members of the CNI community will be interested to learn about a new copyright education program from Columbia University Libraries and LYRASIS, to offer online classes on copyright through the Virtual Copyright Education Center (VCEC) pilot project. My understanding is that the courses will be taught by legal experts with various cultural heritage backgrounds, including libraries, archives, museums, and education, and that the first course, designed to be foundational, will be free.
