Meeting Roadmap A Guide to the Spring 2018 Coalition for Networked Information Membership Meeting

The Spring 2018 CNI Membership Meeting, to be held at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego, CA on April 12 and 13, offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at CNI member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the customary "roadmap" to the sessions at the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current developments in networked information.

As usual, the CNI meeting proper is preceded by an optional orientation session for new attendees—both representatives of new member organizations and new representatives or alternate delegates from existing member organizations—at 11:30 AM; guests are also welcome. Refreshments are available for all at 12:15 PM on Thursday, April 12. The opening plenary is at 1:15 PM and will be followed by four rounds of parallel breakout sessions. Friday, April 13, includes additional rounds of parallel breakout sessions, lunch, and the closing keynote, concluding around 3:30 PM. Along with plenary and breakout sessions, the meeting includes generous break time for informal networking with colleagues and a reception which will run until 7:15 PM on the evening of Thursday, April 12, after which participants can enjoy an evening in San Diego.

The CNI meeting agenda is subject to last minute changes, particularly in the breakout sessions, and you can find the most current information on our website, www.cni.org, and on the announcements board near the registration desk at the meeting. Information about wireless access in the meeting room areas is available in your packets and at the registration table. In addition, we are running the mobile-friendly web app Sched to facilitate online access to the meeting schedule; Sched is available from the meeting website (https://www.cni.org/mm/spring-2018), and we’ll still have printed programs available for all.

The final schedule for the Personal Digital Archiving Conference, being held at the University of Houston this year, is now available. They have a very reasonable registration fee for this excellent conference, by the way. CNI is delighted to once again serve as a co-operating organization for Personal Digital Archiving.

Eleanor Fink has prepared a very useful guide and proposed best practices summary for the American Art Collaborative on their effort to publish some 200,000 Linked Data Object (LOD) Records from thirteen museums and one archive. I think this will be of wide interest in the LOD cultural heritage community. See

While one could argue with some of the methodology here, this is a fascinating report that is unlike anything I have seen. and well worth browsing, as it helps to map out the landscape where stewardship institutions will be making decisions in the next decades, and it's one that's very different than the world of 30 or 40 years ago.

The National Institutes of Health have issued a draft of their Strategic Plan for Data Science along with a formal request for comments. You can find both the request for comments and a pointer to the plan at:

NLM has also been very busy this last few days. They've released their strategic plan:

This is a very good article that collects data from a number of ARL libraries about takedown requests related to the "right to be forgotten". Well worth reviewing. This is a very complex area, and one where the legal frameworks are morphing quickly, but it's not going to go away.

These Beautiful Things: K-State Libraries Collaborates with Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art to Create an Online Collection Application, Jason Bengtson (Kansas State U.) This video explores the collaboration between Kansas State University (KSU) Libraries and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art to build a replacement for the museum’s commercial art-display web application. Collaboration between Libraries and Academic Units in Advancing Multidisciplinary Scholarship, Christina Leblang & Zheng (John) Wang (University of Notre Dame) The University of Notre Dame, Hesburgh Libraries in partnership with the Notre Dame Center for Civil and Human Rights (CCHR), have created a research tool called Convocate to demonstrate the possibilities of cross-disciplinary discovery. Convocate brings together the fields of international human rights law and Catholic social teaching into a single discovery interface. With the aide of topic modeling, Convocate can return over 11,000 paragraphs tagged against a list of 250 topics and help users bridge the gap between the use of different terms that are related to the same concept and thus discover more robust search results. This video provides an accounting of the challenges faced in minting cross-disciplinary studies, as well as a consideration of librarians’ and scholars’ respective roles in multidisciplinary research. Also included is discussion of the plan to extend the work on Convocate to create a more general application that will allow scholars in other disciplines to apply various neuro-linguistic programming and machine learning methods to their texts, elucidating new insights, and training the engine to create more meaningful connections across disciplines more precisely over time.
