US law enforcement agencies are making the argument (for example at recent Senate hearings) that they need some technological mechanism to give them access to all communications channels and stored data, however encrypted. Similar demands are being heard in other nations.

Without going into any detail on these issues, I wanted to share a recent very clear and concise report titled "Keys Under Dormats: Mandating Insecurity" from a group that includes a number of the world's leading experts on various aspects of computer security. This report, which has gotten some media attention recently, including coverage in the New York Times, briefly reviews the long history of this debate and the current situation in the context of technical realities as well as trust and risk issues.

Over the last half-year or so, OCLC Research has been running a series of symposia exploring what they are calling the "evolving scholarly record"; the final symposium in the series was held June 2 in San Francisco. CNI has been participating in these meetings as part of our efforts to understand the broader landscape of preservation challenges, as well as due to our ongoing interest in the evolution of scholarly communications practices.

In early May of this year, I was fortunate to be able to attend the annual DataEDGE conference hosted by the University of California, Berkeley School of Information. This is a conference that focuses on developments in data science with some emphasis on work going on at Berkeley and more broadly in the Bay Area, and offers a range of presentations dealing with technical developments, workforce, and broader implications of data science. There is much here that will interest various segments of the CNI community, I thnk.

In this presentation from CNI's spring 2015 meeting, Joshua Sosin of Duke University describes Integrating Digital Epigraphies (IDEs), which aims to provide core disciplinary infrastructure for the field of Greek epigraphy, such as has been built already for documentary papyrology. The project involves building a set of services that align related data across multiple resources, support user-based assertion of relationships across resources, and support annotation within and across resources.

BIBFLOW aims to document the internal effects of the conversion of library records to Linked Data, focusing particularly on the BIBFRAME framework. While many projects have, or are currently, focused on how Linked Data will transform the library catalogue and discovery of library resources, BIBFLOW is focused on how Linked Data will transform the inner-workings of the library itself to support the vision of Linked Data-driven discovery as well as streamline operations. 2015 ETD Survey: A Comprehensive Survey of ETD Practices

ETDs (Electronic Theses and Dissertations) have been part of academia for over 20 years, yet we lack comparative data over time. This is only the second study of general practices of academic institutions regarding ETDs. This study will identify current best practices as well as problem areas for all institutions to be aware of, and it will chart the longitudinal progress of ETD initiatives.

Social Networks and Archival Context (SNAC) is addressing the longstanding research challenge of discovering, locating, and using distributed historical records that researchers use as primary evidence for understanding the lives and work of historical persons and the events in which they participated. In this presentation from CNI's spring 2015 meeting, Daniel Pitti (UVa) and Brian Tingle (U. of California) describe how SNAC will be transitioned from a research and development project to an ongoing, cooperative program.

This presentation from CNI's spring 2015 meeting describes the building of the Los Angeles Aqueduct Digital Platform (LAADP), an online educational resource which includes thousands of digitized primary sources from seven institutions, and a scholarship section showcasing digital research projects created by graduate students. Developed in UCLA Library Special Collections, the project leveraged the talents and skills of archivists, librarians, technologists, faculty and students.

Georgia’s newly-opened CURVE: Collaborative University Research & Visualization Environment features the latest visualization technologies, including an immersive, 24-foot-wide “interactWall” for up-close interaction and engagement with digital content. UNC Chapel Hill’s Research Hub supports technology-enabled, interdisciplinary research, providing consulting, software, and equipment for data visualization, data management, GIS services, makerspaces, and digital humanities. The Hub features the Liquid Galaxy, a large display used to visualize geospatial data.
