Over the past few months, the US National Academies has launched a study of so-called "digital twins" and their applications in a wide variety of fields; they seem to be particularly interested not just in applications, but in the fundamental science that underlies digital twinning technology.

The basic idea of digital twins is that one comes up with a very detailed digital model of a well-instrumented physical system (think of a jet engine, or a factory production line, or even an organization, or a city); you feed telemetry from the physical system into the digital model, and then the digital model simulates the physical system and makes predictions, which can be checked against and used to help manage the physical system. These are gaining interest around the world in a very wide range of contexts.

On April 24-25 (this last Monday and Tuesday) I had an opportunity to watch the livestreams of the public segments of the Spring 2023 Meeting of the National Academies Forum on Cyber Resilience. This is a standing discussion forum that meets twice a year (as distinct from National Academies Committees which are convened to produce a study report), often with sessions focused on a single topic such as cryptographic agility; I've shared the outputs of some of these meetings with our community in the past.

Forum on Cyber Resilience

The Spring 2023 Forum Meeting will convene Forum members and experts to discuss issues resiliency and security of the cyber ecosystem. Topics include the new National Cyber Strategy, the National AI Research Resource report, Recovery (from cyber attacks, shutdown), among others. Please find the recordings from the event below.

Briefly, day 1 started with a summary and really informative discussion of the National Plan for an AI Research Resource; followed by a discussion of the current state of migration to post-quantum cryptographic systems (which included a lot of fascinating detail about the differing approaches of government agencies and the Internet Engineering Task Force). Day 1 concluded with a discussion of the characterization of cyberattacks on Ukraine, which contained a lot of information I hadn't seen before.

I've highlighted automated lab facilities and their potential to change many aspects of the research process; the most notable examples of this are the work of Emerald Cloud Labs and Carnegie Mellon University (see the video of the December 2021 CNI Meeting Closing plenary for an introduction to this work). Readers interested in these developments will find a recent article in Science discussing work in Materials Science using these approaches, most notably at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, of interest. Meeting Roadmap A Guide to the Spring 2023 Coalition for Networked Information Membership Meeting

The Spring 2023 CNI Membership Meeting, to be held in Denver, CO, on April 3-4, offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the "roadmap" to the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current issues in digital information.

First, I want to call attention to some logistical matters that I hope will help avoid confusion. The meeting venue, the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, is comprised of two buildings across the street from each other, and we recommend that you instruct drivers to drop you off at the hotel’s main drive, located at the corner of Court Plaza and 16th St. Mall, in order to gain direct access to the front desk, located in the Plaza Building. The CNI meeting will take place in the Tower Building; guest rooms may be in either building, and a second-floor sky bridge connects the two buildings.

It has been wonderful to see so many new faces (as well as familiar ones!) as we’ve returned to our in-person meeting format. On behalf of the entire CNI organization and community, I extend a warm welcome to all those joining us for the first time. On Monday, April 3, the CNI meeting proper will be preceded by an optional, first-time-attendee information session at 11:15 am, and I hope to meet many of you there.

There'a a very interesting document available from the US Copyright Office (it's due to be published in the Federal Register on March 16, 2023) that is intended to clarify the Copyright Offices position on registering works that contain material generated by AI. The document can be found at

As I read this (and I'm not a lawyer), the heart of the Copyright Office position is that only humans (not machines, not other living species) can produce works that may be registered for copyright, though of course those humans can employ various technologies to help in the creation of those works. The guidance then tries to explain what kind of help is permissible, and when creation of the work is essentially delegated to the AI technology, hence making the work ineligible for copyright. I will confess to a growing unease about the fundamental assumption here, though the implications of eliminating this assumption are also troublesome.

The indispensable Gary Price directed my attention recently to a really interesting paper from the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) titled "A Blueprint for Building National Compute Capacity for Artificial Intelligence". This is the first thinking I've seen that explicitly considers national AI compute capacity planning (including some look at issues like environmental impact and sustainability), as distinct from more general discussions of high performance computing infrastructure (particularly to support research).
