The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) are pleased to announce that registration is open for all for the next Digital Scholarship Planning Workshop, co-sponsored and hosted by Northeastern University on March 25-26, 2019 on the Northeastern University campus in Boston, MA. (Previously, registration was limited to individuals who are affiliated with a CNI or ARL member institution.) The past two workshops reached their maximum number quickly so we encourage you to register soon if you are interested.

The collaborative, interactive workshop is designed both for those in the beginning of a planning process and for those from institutions seeking to take their services and expertise to the next level. The workshop will feature group activities, short case-study type presentations, panels of students and faculty, and a plenary speaker. Speakers will be added to the workshop website soon.

Where Next for the Open Library of Humanities and Consortial Funding Models for Open Access? Martin Paul Eve (University of London) Although open access has become associated with article processing charges, the consortial business models underpinning the Open Library of Humanities, Knowledge Unlatched, arXiv, and even SCOAP3 have been highly successful within their own domains. These models, though, are theorized to have scalability limits. This video discusses next steps for the Open Library of Humanities in the emergent political contexts of the European Union’s Plan S, and attempts to spread the model more widely. I’m very pleased to announce the availability of a report from a roundtable held in December, 2018 and sponsored by the Learning Spaces Collaboratory (LSC) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI). The report highlights trends in developing spaces for learning in libraries and how we might “interview” those spaces to determine whether they are meeting the needs of the project. The roundtable included talks from four architects and small group discussions around selected types of spaces. These included staff spaces and entry spaces, aspects of projects that sometimes receive less attention than they should. In addition, groups discussed innovation zones, quiet spaces, and and consultation spaces.

My presentation focused on assessing library learning spaces. I encouraged librarians to ask questions in their assessments that target priorities of their institution, for example:

Has the availability of new facilities and library expertise led to faculty making different types of course assignments, such as those that result in student content creation? Are students more competitive on the job market due to new library offerings/workshops? Do students spend more time on academic work when they have access to new/renovated spaces?

Data management, scholarly communication, digital preservation, innovations in teaching and learning, open educational resources, and infrastructure to support research are topics that consistently engage CNI members’ interests. A limited number of proposals are accepted.

There's an extremely interesting conference being hosted at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA on May 13-15, 2019 dealing with AI for Data Discovery and Reuse. The call for submissions is still open for a few days, and early bird registration runs through March 15

The 2019 Scholarly Communication Symposium will be held on Monday, April 15, 2019 at UNC Greensboro, North Carolina. This annual symposium provocatively explores particular issues in the evolving landscape of scholarly communications, bringing together researchers, technologists, librarians, and other stakeholders in the scholarly communications ecosystem.

This year UNC Greensboro is partnering with the Educopia Institute to host the symposium as a joint event. The 2019 symposium will explore the ways that the impacts of digital scholarship are intertwined with and dependent on the infrastructure underlying such efforts. Without strong and persistent organizational and technical systems to undergird them, digital scholarship may become a flash in the pan. National experts will speak to the issues of creating and sustaining infrastructure for research data management, digital humanities, and online publishing.
