Led by Professor Kim Gallon of Purdue University, a group of scholars is developing educational resources based on an examination of historical and current African-American newspapers. From Stock to Flows, davidkremers, Kristin Antelman, Stephen Davison (California Institute of Technology) Stock is knowledge embedded in media that have a low delta of change, whereas flows, such as cutting-edge research, have a high delta of change. Thanks to the profession’s roots in print collections, librarians associate static and stable with sustainability, and that association with solid objects was translated into early digital library architectures. This presentation describes how the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Library is moving away from stock to flows. In moving from stock to flows Caltech Library is proposing that it is, in fact, dynamic and mutable architectures that are the most viable for resilient and sustainable services. Developing the Scholarly Communication Ecosystem: A CMU Perspective, David Scherer, Ole Villadsen, Keith Webster (Carnegie Mellon University) During the past year, Carnegie Mellon University Libraries have been developing a resource-intensive scholarly communications infrastructure built and managed around an interconnected Current Research Information System (CRIS) and a new comprehensive institutional repository (IR) powered by the figshare platform. This presentation addresses the development of the CRIS/IR centered scholarly communications infrastructure and the challenges in implementing an IR to serve as an “enterprise repository.”

Proposals are now being accepted for project briefings to be presented at CNI's Spring 2018 Membership Meeting on April 12-13 in San Diego, CA, at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter. Please note that this year’s spring meeting will fall on THURSDAY & FRIDAY.

Project briefings are 30-minute, 45-minute or one-hour sessions that focus on a discussion of a hot topic, or on a specific institutional/organizational project related to digital information. A limited number of project briefings are accepted; anyone may submit a proposal, including non-members.

The Library Publishing Coalition is accepting proposals for the 2018 Library Publishing Forum, to be held May 22-23, 2018, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The deadline is January 19, 2018. We welcome proposals from Library Publishing Coalition members and nonmembers, including librarians, university press staff, publishing service providers (vendors), scholars, students, and other scholarly communications and publishing professionals. There's a report that came out late last year which may be of interest to readers of CNI-Announce. Stephen Pinfield and his colleagues prepared a report titled "Mapping the Future of Academic Libraries" for the Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) in the UK. This was done largely by speaking to a wide range of people and they attempting to synthesize common trends in the results, and I think that their report does a particularly good job of showing the complex, frequently conflicting, trends and the diversity of option that they discovered.

Announcing the 2018 Library Publishing Directory and new online Directory platform The Library Publishing Coalition is pleased to announce publication of the 2018 Library Publishing Directory, as well as the launch of a new, searchable online platform for the Directory data. 2018 Library Publishing Directory This year’s Library Publishing Directory highlights the publishing activities of 125 academic and research libraries, and is openly available in PDF and EPUB format. TheDirectory illustrates the many ways in which libraries are actively transforming and advancing scholarly communications in partnership with scholars, students, university presses, and others. Each year, the Directory‘s introduction presents a ‘state of the field’ based on that year’s data. We have also published this year’s on our blog: What library publishing looks like in 2017. New Online Platform for the Directory We are also excited to share the Directory in a new format - a searchable online platform! As of launch, the new platform includes the data from the 2017 and 2018 Directories, with 2014 through 2016 coming soon. In addition to full-text searching, the new platform allows users to sort and limit by a number of factors, including location, publication types and formats, and software platforms used. We are delighted to provide this new functionality for the Directory’s rich data set, and we welcome feedback on it. Publication of the 2018 Directory was overseen by the LPC's Directory Committee:

The Open Repositories Steering Committee in conjunction with Universität Hamburg is very pleased to announce that the 14th Open Repositories Conference will be held in Hamburg, Germany from 10-13 June 2019 at Universität Hamburg.

NEW YORK, NY, December 11, 2017—ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, has named 54 members ACM Fellows for major contributions in areas including database theory, design automation, information retrieval, multimedia computing and network security. The accomplishments of the 2017 ACM Fellows lead to transformations in science and society. Their achievements play a crucial role in the global economy, as well as how we live and work every day.

"To be selected as a Fellow is to join our most renowned member grade and an elite group that represents less than 1 percent of ACM’s overall membership,” explains ACM President Vicki L. Hanson. “The Fellows program allows us to shine a light on landmark contributions to computing, as well as the men and women whose hard work, dedication, and inspiration are responsible for groundbreaking work that improves our lives in so many ways."

Underscoring ACM’s global reach, the 2017 Fellows hail from universities, companies and research centers in Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has recently released two reports that will be of interest to the CNI community.

The first, released jointly by the OECD Global Science Forum and CODATA, deals with business models for sustainable research data repositories. This is clearly a very timely topic.

The Library of Congress has posted 2017 materials from its wonderful annual invitational Storage Architectures meeting, which takes place in September. This is a great snapshot of costs and projections across a wide range of storage platforms. Of particular interest this year is the (to some surprising) persistence of tape, which is still seeing very considerable storage density improvements, and the emergence of what look like reallly industrial grade and scale object storage systems. It's also clear that while SSD is quickly replacing disk for many purposes in consumer marketplaces, it's going to be a very very long time before it is likely to do so in data center markets ---- though it clearly has a significant and growing place in those markets.

Meeting Roadmap A Guide to the Fall 2017 Coalition for Networked Information Membership Meeting

The Fall 2017 CNI Membership Meeting, to be held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC on December 11 and 12, offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the "roadmap" to the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current developments in digital information. As always, we have strived to present sessions that reflect late-breaking developments and also take advantage of our venue in the Washington, DC area to provide opportunities to interact with policy makers and funders.

As usual, the CNI meeting proper is preceded by an optional orientation session for new attendees, both representatives of new member organizations and new representatives or alternate delegates from existing member organizations, at 11:30 AM; guests and presenters are also welcome. Light refreshments are available for all at 12:15 PM on Monday, December 11. The opening plenary is at 1:15 PM and will be followed by four rounds of parallel breakout sessions. Tuesday, December 12, includes four additional rounds of parallel breakout sessions, lunch and the closing plenary, concluding around 3:30 PM. At this meeting, we are continuing to offer breakout sessions of different duration, including half-hour sessions, allowing us to add one more round and provide you with more opportunities to learn about new initiatives. Some of the hour-long sessions are actually pairs of these half-hour sessions that are thematically related. Along with plenary and breakout sessions, the meeting includes generous break time for informal networking with colleagues and a reception which will run until 7:30 PM on Monday evening, December 11, after which participants can enjoy a wide range of dining opportunities in Washington.

The CNI meeting agenda is subject to last minute changes, particularly in the breakout sessions, and you can find the most current information on our website, cni.org, and on the announcements board near the registration desk at the meeting. Information about wireless access in the meeting room areas will be available in your packets and at the registration table; those staying in the CNI hotel room block at the Omni Shoreham should also have free wireless access in their rooms. In addition, we are running the mobile-friendly web app Sched from the meeting website to facilitate online access to the meeting schedule. And we’ll still have printed programs available for all, of course.
