We are pleased to share this opportunity to develop a curriculum for library publishing with the CNI community.

Call for Authors The “DEVELOPING A CURRICULUM TO ADVANCE LIBRARY-BASED PUBLISHING” project (IMLS, 2016-2018) invites proposals to create a curriculum to support library-based publishers. This invitation extends to professionals in library publishing (past or present), LPC members/practitioners, LIS/iSchool professors, PhD candidates, and others with an interest and/or experience in this growing area of activity. Each proposal may be authored by an individual or a team. Proposals are invited between January 9 and February 28, 2017.

Each proposal should focus on ONE of the following four course topics: Policy, Content, Impact, or Sustainability. See the Library Publishing Curriculum Framework for more details on what each of these course topics might include.

The submission deadline for CNI's spring 2017 membership meeting is fast approaching! The meeting will be held on April 3-4 in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Hyatt Regency.

Documenting the Now: Supporting Scholarly Use and Preservation of Social Media Content, Ed Summers (University of Maryland) The dramatic rise in the public’s use of social media to document events of historical significance presents archivists and others who build primary source research collections with a unique opportunity to transform appraisal, collecting, preservation and discovery of this new type of research data. The Documenting the Now project aims to address these opportunities by creating a cloud-ready, open-source application, called DocNow, for collecting tweets and their associated web content and metadata, with mechanisms for export and visualization to facilitate use of a large social media data set and the incorporation of these data into local digital preservation systems. We distributed this to participants in our Fall 2016 Membership meeting, which took place on Monday and Tuesday of this week, and will be mailing printed copies of it to member representatives as well.

Along with many other sessions, my opening plenary, which discussed highlights of the past year and the current program plan, among other topics, was recorded and we will be making it available in the coming weeks. We'll post an announcement here.

Earlier this fall, the Library of Congress once again hosted its invaluable invitational meeting on Designing Storage Architectures for Digital Collections, which surveys the current state of the art and prospects for various kinds of mass storage, which a particular focus on reliability and costs.

University Press and Library Summit Releases White Paper, Recommendations

The P2L Summit brought together 23 teams of university library and press directors with an administrative relationship (typically the press reporting to the library—“P2L”) on May 9–10, 2016, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Convened by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Association of American University Presses (AAUP), and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), the P2L Summit was funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and hosted by Temple University Libraries and Temple University Press.

In this first such meeting of members of this community, the library-press teams discussed the benefits of, challenges in, and possibilities around this kind of relationship. Summit participants explored how libraries and presses might leverage the strengths of their distinctive enterprises to move toward a unified system of publication, dissemination, access, and preservation that better serves both the host institution and the wider world of scholarship. The P2L Summit was an important first step toward a shared action agenda for university presses and academic libraries that supports a full spectrum of approaches to scholarly communication and publishing.

P2L Summit organizers Mary Rose Muccie (Temple University Press), Joe Lucia (Temple University Libraries), Elliott Shore (ARL), Clifford Lynch (CNI), and Peter Berkery (AAUP) have released a white paper on the summit, “Across the Great Divide: Findings and Possibilities for Action from the 2016 Summit Meeting of Academic Libraries and University Presses with Administrative Relationships (P2L) .” The white paper discusses key issues covered in the summit, areas that need greater mutual understanding between libraries and presses, the press’s role on campus, preliminary recommendations that came out of the summit, and the European perspective on these issues as presented by Wolfram Horstmann (Göttingen State and University Library, Germany).

I just learned of a very interesting symposium that's taking place on December 5-6, 2016 titled "Cultural Heritage and Data: the Role of Research infrastructure". This is organized by a number of organizations, including the Library of Congress, The National Gallery, The Smithsonian and George Washington University on the US side, and an several organizations representing the member states of the EU on the European side.
