I wanted to share this press release that came out in conjunction with the Internet2 Spring Meeting last week; it describes the winners of the IDEA awards for 2008. IDEA is a wonderful program that I2 set up to recognize innovative new applications of high-performance networking and networked information in research and education. I wanted to share this announcement from the Sakai community with the CNI-announce readership. Sakai is a large-scale open source learning management and collaboration environment that is being developed by a number of major universities. There are very interesting questions about how such systems fit into the broader evolution of cyberinfrastructure, and how they integrate with digital content management, delivery and preservation systems and services.

At the closing plenary session of the recent CNI meeting in Minneapolis, both Tara McPherson, our closing speaker, and I made reference to a series of recent monographs that the MacArthur Foundation has underwritten; they are available free online and can also be ordered in print via the MIT press, and include a volume edited by Tara on DIgital Youth, Innovation and the Unexpected. I'm very pleased to share this call for contributions for the 4th International Digital Curation Conference, to be held December 1-3, 2008 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and to announce that as we did in 2007, CNI will be a co-sponsor of this meeting. Even if you are not planning to submit a paper, I hope that the early notice of the dates for your calendar will be helpful. As those who have been to earlier DCC meetings will I think agree, this is a primary venue for the discussions about data curation.

4th International Digital Curation Conference

The Section 108 study group is a group of independent experts that was convened under the auspices of the Library of Congress to look at specific changes that might be needed in the copyright law to balance the positions of rights holders and cultural memory organizations such as libraries and archives in the digital world.

A Guide to the Spring 2008 Coalition for Networked Information Task Force Meeting

The Spring 2008 CNI Task Force meeting, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 7 and 8 offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at Task Force member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the "roadmap" to the sessions at the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current developments in networked information.

As usual, the CNI meeting proper is preceded by an optional orientation session for new attendees - both representatives of new member organizations and new representatives or alternate delegates from existing member organizations - at 11:30 AM; guests are also welcome. Refreshments are available for all at 12:15 PM on Monday, April 7. The opening plenary is at 1:15 PM and will be followed by two rounds of parallel breakout sessions. Tuesday, April 8, includes additional rounds of parallel breakout sessions, lunch and the closing keynote, concluding around 3:30 PM. Along with plenary and breakout sessions, the meeting includes generous break time for informal networking with colleagues and a reception which will run until 7:15 PM on the evening of Monday, April 7, after which participants can enjoy a free evening in Minneapolis.

The CNI meeting agenda is subject to last minute changes, particularly in the breakout sessions, and you can find the most current information on our Web site, www.cni.org, and on the announcements board near the registration desk at the meeting.

Many academic digital collection projects are focused on special collections and college archives. Such projects seek to bring collections "out of the basement" and enable greater access to valuable and specialized research materials. However, undergraduate students and faculty often have very different needs and expectations of these digital materials than experienced researchers or the general public.

What does it take to implement a digital asset management system that not only improves access to collections but also allows faculty to integrate digital materials into their teaching? Teaching with digital collections means collection development that is driven by faculty needs, flexible presentation tools, and web interfaces that help students understand visual resources in context. Reed College’s IT and library will share their experiences in implementing a CONTENTdm-based digital image collection for the classics and humanities.

The Association of College & Research Libraries and the Library Administration and Management Association have jointly produced a Guide for Planning Higher Education Library Spaces. The guide was developed in response to inquiries from architects about background materials, models, and best practices in constructing new libraries or renovating library spaces. The resulting guide, intended primarily for an architect audience, but of value to others involved in a space planning process, is available at:

The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) announces the 2008 Paul Evan Peters Fellowship; applications are due by April 14, 2008.

The Paul Evan Peters Fellowship was established to honor and perpetuate the memory of CNI's founding Executive Director. The fellowship is awarded every two years to a student pursuing graduate studies in librarianship, the information sciences, or a closely related field, who demonstrates intellectual and personal qualities consistent with those of Paul Evan Peters, including:

--commitment to use of digital information and advanced technology to enhance scholarship, intellectual productivity and public life;

--interest in the civic responsibilities of information professionals and a commitment to democratic values and government accountability;

During the opening plenary address, the Paul Evan Peters Award will be presented to Daniel Atkins, Director of the NSF Office of Cyberinfrastructure, and he will deliver the talk "Leadership in the Age of Cyberinfrastructure-enabled Discovery and Learning." Tara McPherson, Associate Professor of Gender Studies and Critical Studies at the University of Southern California, and editor of Vectors: Journal of Culture and Technology in a Dynamic Vernacular, will deliver the closing keynote address.

There's an interesting report available from the 1st Workshop on Extremely Large Databases, held at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center on October 25, 2007. One of the things that makes this report valuable is the way it brings together and compares commercial and (academic) scientific projects that are making use of extremely large (petabyte) databases and traditional relational DBMS software. The report of a November 1, 2007 meeting sponsored by the University of California, Berkeley Center for the Study of Higher Education on the potential roles of universities as publishers is now available; the announcement is reproduced below.

I had a chance to participate in this meeting, which was a lively and wide-ranging discussion that took the July 2007 Ithaka report on university publishing in the digital age as a point of departure; Laura Brown, the author of the Ithaka report, was a participant in the sessions at Berkeley.
