I'm very pleased to be able to share this announcement with CNI-announce readers. This will be the first time that the International Data Curation Conference has been held in the United States. I was fortunate to be able to participate in both the first meeting (in Bath, 2005) and the second meeting (in Glasgow, 2006) -- both were outstanding, and you can find information on them here:

In August 2006 NSF made a text version of their Cyberinfrastructure Vision document available on the web and I shared a pointer to it on CNI-announce. This was actually the first complete version of a living document that the NSF Cyberinfrastructure Office had been releasing incrementally during 2006. NSF had been soliciting comments on this document on an ongoing basis; comments closed in December 2006.

Last week NSF made available a final, beautifully illustrated printed version of the report, and also a PDF of this print version on the web site. I have not done a detailed textual analysis but it appears to be substantially the same as the August 2006 document in terms of content; it also presumably incorporates comments recieved on the draft report.

If you've not read this, you should. Also, this version should be very useful for as a communications tool for discussions with campus communities.

The opening plenary address at this year's CNI Spring Task Force Meeting features Stephen Murray, Columbia University Professor of Art History and Archaeology, who will deliver the talk, "Digital Technology in the Humanistic Quest: Production and Representation of Space in the Romanesque Church Architecture of Central France." Marc Smith of the Microsoft Research Community Technologies Group will discuss several "collective-action" systems during his closing plenary presentation "Pictures of Traces of Places, People, and Groups." Our friends at the Mellon Foundation have just announced the call for nominations for the 2007 Mellon Awards for Technology Collaboration. This program, which debuted in 2006, recognizes collaborative development of open source software of particular interest to higher education and the not-for-profit sector. I'm delighted that again in 2007 the MATC winners will be announced and recognized at the Fall 2007 CNI Meeting in Washington DC in December.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: THE PAUL EVAN PETERS AWARD

DEADLINE: MARCH 30, 2007

The Paul Evan Peters Award recognizes the most notable and lasting international achievements related to high performance networks and the creation and use of information resources and services that advance scholarship and intellectual productivity. Past winners have been Paul Ginsparg (2006), founder of , arXiv, an e-print archive for articles in the sciences, Brewster Kahle (2004), founder and chairman of the board of the Internet Archive, "father of the Internet" Vinton Cerf (2002), and Tim Berners-Lee (2000), inventor of the World Wide Web. All four recipients embody the rare combination of strategic vision, technical innovation, and humanitarian outlook that the award seeks to promote.

Award winners are recommended by a committee of representatives of the Association of Research Libraries, the Coalition for Networked Information, and EDUCAUSE, and selected by the chief executives of the three organizations. Guidelines for submitting a nomination are detailed below.

DigCCurr2007: An International Symposium on Digital Curation

There's a group of computer scientists at the University of California, Berkeley that have been looking at the future of parallel computing and put out a report a couple of months ago; I finally had an opportunity to read this, and I found it to be a very though-provoking look at the prospects and research priorities in computing hardware and software involving or relying on parallel computing. While parts of this report are quite somewhat technical, I think that many CNI-announce readers will find at at least the first sections to be interesting reading.
