I've shared information here about previous workshops from the Aeolian Network, a UK-US research partnership exploring Artificial Intelligence for Cultural Organizations. They've just made recordings of the presentations from their most recent (online) workshop, which was held November 29-30, 2022 and hosted by the Hathi Trust Research Center and titled "Making More Sense With Machines: AI/ML Methods for Interrogating and Understanding our Textual Heritage in the Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences". I had the opportunity to attend this workshop, which emphasized work involving the Hathi Trust corpus; it included a number of presentations that I think will interest many in the CNI community.

The ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) will be held June 26-30, 2023 in Santa Fe, New Mexico; the Los Alamos National Laboratory will serve as host. Monday 26 June is the Doctoral Consortium; the main meeting runs June 27-29, ending midday; Thursday afternoon June 29 and Friday June 30 are for workshops and tutorials.

— — — The UCLA Library is pleased to announce a call for proposals for Lessons for Librarians in Open Science Principles and Methods , a two-year (2023-2024) project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Service (IMLS) to incentivize lesson authors to develop and refine seven lessons each year (total 14 lessons) through two-year sequential summer workshops. This call is for lesson proposals to form the project's first year (2023) cohort of lesson authors. We will announce another call for proposals for the project's second year (2024).

Meeting Roadmap Coalition for Networked Information A Guide to the Fall 2022 Membership Meeting

The Fall 2022 CNI Membership Meeting, to be held at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC on Dec. 12–13, offers a wide range of presentations that advance and report on CNI's programs, showcase projects underway at member institutions, and highlight important national and international developments. Here is the "roadmap" to the meeting, which includes both plenary events and an extensive series of breakout sessions focusing on current issues in digital information. As always, we have strived to present sessions that reflect late-breaking developments and also take advantage of our venue in the Washington, DC, area to provide opportunities to interact with policy makers and funders, including the popular regular fall session Update from Funders: Priorities and Trends, which features panelists from several federal agencies and foundations.

As usual, the CNI meeting proper is preceded by an optional orientation session at 11:15am for new attendees (representatives of new member organizations and new representatives or alternate delegates from existing member organizations); guests and presenters are also welcome. Refreshments are available for all at noon on Monday, Dec. 12. The opening plenary is at 1:00pm and will be followed by two rounds of parallel breakout sessions plus a stand-alone, plenary lightning round session (new this year), immediately preceding the evening reception. Tuesday, Dec. 13, includes additional rounds of parallel breakout sessions, lunch, and the closing plenary, concluding around 3:30pm. Like last year, we’ve included generous break time for informal networking with colleagues, in addition to our signature reception which will run until 7:30pm on the evening of Monday, Dec. 12, after which participants can enjoy a wide range of dining options in Washington, DC.

Given the popularity of several changes made to the meeting format last year, we will continue to offer more leisurely pacing, a greatly reduced number of parallel sessions, and professional recording of all sessions (unless otherwise requested by presenters) for subsequent public availability. Please continue to keep in mind that many of the parallel project briefings that would have been part of the meeting pre-pandemic are now offered as part of our quarterly edition of video project briefings instead (see https://www.cni.org/resources/pbvs for more about CNI’s Pre-Recorded Project Briefing Series).

My understanding is that this is Phase I of a broader survey that COGR is conducting; Phase II, to appear in future, will cover costs and administrative burdens related to research security program requirements (training of various kinds, cybersecurity, etc).

The agenda for the December 2022 CNI Member Meeting is now set, and I wanted to share it with you.This should be a wonderful meeting.

As is traditional at our December meetings, I'll take the opening plenary to survey some recent key developments and trends in the networked information and research landscapes. With this as context, I'll discuss the evolution of CNI's programs and strategies as we have transited the pandemic and plan for the future, share a new set of organizing themes for our programmatic work, and talk briefly about initiatives for program year 2022-23 and beyond. There will be time for questions and discussion.

For the closing plenary, we’ll hear from Paul Courant, this year’s Paul Evan Peters Award recipient, upon being presented with the award. His talk, "Utopia for Networked Knowledge in the Library and the Academy,” will serve as the Paul Evan Peters Memorial Lecture and promises to be very thought-provoking. We have what I believe is a really strong set of breakout sessions scheduled for the meeting. There's a very interesting (and complex) US-UK challenge program to apply innovative privacy enhancing technologies either to reduce financial fraud or the improve predictions of individual risk during pandemics. I am grateful to the Coalition for Networked Information for giving me the privilege and opportunity to serve as a CNI Senior Scholar.  My research proposal for this role is entitled “Information Infrastructure to Address Societal Grand Challenges” and is available on the CNI website at

Proposals are now being accepted for the next edition of CNI’s Pre-Recorded Project Briefing Series. More information about this year-round program is available on the CNI website and the third edition (October 2022) is now available.

Videos should focus on a timely topic or on a specific project related to digital information. We especially invite briefings on recently published reports, and updates on new or ongoing projects, programs, or organizations that may have reported at CNI in the past. We recommend that these videos run no more than 15-20 minutes in length, though longer presentations may occasionally make sense; we leave this decision to the discretion of presenters.

Anyone may propose a pre-recorded project briefing, including groups/individuals from non-member institutions and organizations.

Videos will NOT BE SCHEDULED for viewing at a pre-arranged time; they will be available ON-DEMAND, released as a collection and accompanied by a guide for contextualization. Their availability will be announced on CNI’s listserv, website, and social media outlets.

October 2022 Roadmap Pre-Recorded Project Briefing Series

The October 2022 edition of CNI’s Pre-Recorded Project Briefing Series is now live. Comprised of timely videos on projects, events, and other digital information initiatives or related issues of importance, this edition includes seven videos spanning a wide variety of topics, including digital preservation, emerging technologies, privacy, and research data management. Several of the briefings include updates on ongoing projects or participation opportunities that we think will be of particular interest to the CNI community.

Two briefings synthesize and provide valuable context on recent research projects.

In Staffing for Digital , Elizabeth England (US National Archives and Records Administration) and Lauren Work (U. Virginia) share the findings of the latest National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) Staffing Survey. The survey specifically examines staffing realities, patterns, and needs for digital preservation programs. The briefing overviews the survey’s history and spotlights trends and key findings, such as how perceptions of digital preservation shift according to a respondent’s role and how increased staffing is just one component of building effective digital preservation programs.

CNI Director Clifford Lynch will be speaking at the EDUCAUSE Annual Conference on Oct. 28th in Denver to report on how a variety of research-intensive universities have been positioning data science as a research support service for their communities, including relationships to more traditional research data management services, and the roles of organizations such as research libraries in this work. This is based primarily on a series of roundtables that CNI hosted earlier in 2022; a written report on this will be released very shortly and available through the CNI web site.

CNI is launching a new program that will leverage the expertise of our community; facilitate efforts to advance scholarship and visionary thinking in CNI’s areas of interest; and provide opportunities for respected, authoritative voices to formulate, develop, and share their work with the community: CNI Senior Scholars.

Our intention is to appoint a series of CNI Senior Scholars—currently we are thinking in terms of 12–18-month appointments, with at most 1–2 Senior Scholars active at a time—who will explore broad research questions that align with CNI’s program and interests. Topics will vary and be framed individually by each Senior Scholar in consultation with CNI leadership. Project interim updates and final outputs may include reports, presentations, webinars and the like to allow for consultation and communication with the CNI membership and the broader community.

We are extraordinarily fortunate that Donald J. Waters has agreed to serve as the inaugural CNI Senior Scholar beginning November 1, 2022. As a CNI Senior Scholar, Don will study and report on the state of scholarly information infrastructure in higher education to address societal grand challenges. His research will help to identify the information infrastructure that research universities need to establish and expand programs in which faculty spanning a diverse range of disciplines partner with policymakers and members of the public to address enormously pressing and complex issues such as climate change, pandemics, and related societal challenges.

I am sure that Don is well-known to many of you; his career includes a rich record of key leadership contributions to the evolution of scholarship and scholarly communication in the digital age and the collaborative structures to permit institutions to support this evolution. Over the years he has made many important contributions to CNI’s work and has helped me as a valued advisor; he recently stepped down from the CNI Steering Committee after many years of service as an at-large member there.
